      Technical Product Manager Interview

      25 Mar 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Aberdeen, Scotland
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Indeed (Aberdeen, Scotland) in Feb 2022

      Interview

The whole process took around 5 weeks. It was a remote job, I applied online in Jan 2022, all interview stages were online. 4 stages: 30 mins call with recruiter, 1 hour interview with hiring manager (senior product manager), 1 hour interview with the director of product, then a PM exercise with a panel of 4 PMs. Recruiter was very friendly and professional. He got me very excited about the company and position. Second stage, the hiring manager was generally a nice guy, a little hesitant on how to ask questions, but overall was a nice chat and good energy. The hour involved what I did before, how I measured success at previous products, and learnings from failures, etc. Next stage with the director of product was again about what I did and how I measured success - this time was more focused on how I engaged with end users and worked backwards to solve their pain points. There was also a question on AB testing in a B2C mobile context. Honestly, one of the nicest ladies I ever met for an interview. Last stage was a 2 hour PM exercise. During the first hour, I was given a fairly straightforward case. Then, I joined another call for the second hour where I met a panel of 4 PMs - one of them was in the team I was applying to work with. During the PM exercise, one of the PMs was very strange - his body language was putting me off as he kept looking around the room while I was speaking, getting too close then too far from his camera, biting his finger nails, never maintaining eye contact when I speak to him, etc, which was quite annoying and at some points, really stressful. When he speaks/ask questions, he had the "I know better/you're not as good as you think you are" attitude, which was really disappointing. I definitely think I would've had a completely different experience if this one person was not on the call (he was the least senior). Overall, the process could've been better, and Indeed should definitely choose their interviewers more carefully. One week later, my application was rejected. I received a 30 min call from the recruiter to give me detailed feedback on all stages, which I appreciated. To be honest, after this last experience on the PM exercise, I'm glad I wasn't accepted. Imagine this guy becomes my teammate, or even worse, my line manager.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

PM case: how would you explain this new feature to your teammates? how would you measure success? what would an mvp look like and why? would you start development or not? I was given a dataset to help answer this last questions.

      Technical Product Manager Interview

      2 Mar 2021
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Indeed in Nov 2020

      Interview

4 stages. HR, Hiring Manager, A Product Management Exercise and Interviews with Team members. The exercises were quite easy. In the exercise part,I was told to use an internal analytics system talk about a product roadmap , how to address conflicting priorities, metrics to understand adoption and success and create a small presentation. You are offered an option of a prep call , which will give you the questions beforehand so you can prepare ahead of the interview. On the day of the interview, you will get 30 mins as well. The weirdest thing was that I was told after the interview that I did well during this round. I had some other offers at a more senior level and when I asked the HR to withdraw from the process, I was rudely cut off and told that I should continue the process because a lot of folks come and join indeed at a lower level that other companies and that they could match my other offers. I did go through the last round where they made me talk to a bunch of senior folks (overall 2 hours). It was all repetitive questions and a couple of days after, I got a brusque call that I was not offered the position and the HR contact made it a point to say that since I had other offers, I would obviously not be disappointed by it. It was a very strange experience on why they would waste many hours of time of senior folks at their end knowing I had other offers and still encouraging me to go on.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us. We’re sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with us. We understand that interviews can be stressful as it takes a lot of time to go through the whole interview process for all parties. We understand giving candidates clear consistent interview feedback is important at every step of the process so they can make the right decisions, especially if they are interviewing with other companies as well. We are disappointed to hear you felt the feedback you received was abrupt and inconsistent with what was shared throughout the process. We will provide this feedback to the relevant teams and make sure they remain mindful for future interviews. Thank you again for sharing your feedback with us. Technical Project Manager Interview

      8 Sept 2020
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Austin, TX
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Indeed (Austin, TX) in Sept 2020

      Interview

      - 30 min phone call with Talent Acquisition. Lovely. Very Professional. Great experience. - 45 min phone call with Hiring Manager. First they called after the scheduled time and re-scheduled due to "tech issues". Then at the rescheduled time the interviewer was not prepared at all and spent the first 10 mins "looking for headphones" and "looking for the tab" to the point I almost just hung up. Rest of questions were cookie cutter and response was usually "k", but sometimes a followup. - "Technical" interview which was not at all technical. Interviewer was prepared and professional but the format and scenario was awkward and lacking any context whatsoever. Also interviewer muted themselves for long periods so it wasn't at all a conversation. Hand gesturing, thumbs up sometimes. At no point were any of my questions responded to with any meaningful response.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Describe technical and non-technical considerations for a given scenario (business goal).

Thanks for leaving a review of your recent interview with us at Indeed. We strive to make the candidate experience great when interviewing with us, so we’re sorry to read that you had a less than positive experience. As we have transitioned to an entirely virtual interview process given our current global health crisis, unexpected hiccups may arise. Our current working conditions are greatly challenged, with many employees having to juggle caregiving duties to children or older parents while also working at home. We recently started hiring for open positions again, so there is a bit of learning curve for our hiring managers and others who are interviewing candidates in a 100% virtual environment and what is/isn’t appropriate behaviour. We will take this feedback to our Talent Attraction teams to liaise with the hiring teams so we can continue to improve on the candidate experience. That said, we do hope that you consider us for future roles should any interest you. If you have additional feedback on your interview or the interview process, please send an email to us at inside@indeed.com where we can continue a confidential conversation.
