      Operations Accountant Interview

      31 Jul 2025

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Invenergy (Chicago, IL) in Jul 2025

      Interview

Applied for a different role, but then was referred for this one by someone in HR. They scheduled a 30-minute phone screening with me during a time I told them I was unavailable, but I was fortunately able to move things around with my schedule to accomodate. Then on the day of the phone screening, I did not receive a call at our scheduled time. Thankfully, I emailed them 10 minutes into our time to re-confirm our appointment. They called immediately and told me they called the wrong number and left a voicemail on another candidate's phone... Not the most professional, and led to me not having time to ask any questions at the end. This member of HR also did not seem to review my resume effectively and suggested me for a different role that I had no knowledge about at the beginning of our call. They asked me if I wanted to conduct the phone screening for that role instead, or to continue with the Operations Accountant role. I had no knowledge of this other position whatsoever, so I continued with the one I applied for. They described the in-office expectation as 5 days a week with the option of working remotely 4x a month, but it has to be approved by your manager in advance. Not a wild expectation as companies are trying to get employees in the office more, but it doesn't seem to offer much work-life balance or flexibility in the case of emergencies. Overall, I think this interviewer was poorly prepared and it could have been executed better. They asked some pretty basic questions: (1) Why Invenergy, (2) tell me about your current role, (3) what's your experience with accounting software and Microsoft Excel, (4) what would you say is your biggest accomplishment in your career, (5) knowledge of US GAAP, (6) salary expectations, etc. I have three years of public accounting audit experience and an MBA, so I answered these as anybody with my experience would, but it did not seem like they were interested in taking the time to train a new employee to operate in this role. They said and I quote, "Audit is very different from what you'll be doing in this position and may not translate to an Operations Accountant role", when the job description includes "Assist with annual audit work papers and audit report preparation." My experience is clearly shown on my resume, so the phone call seemed like a waste of both of our time when that was said. I still responded by explaining how I believe my experience would translate well and reinforced that I am a quick learner, but they seemed dismissive and moved onto their next talking point. I declined to continue interviewing with Invenergy for this role and likely won't apply for other roles again in the future. A shame because I was intrigued by the overall scale of their operations and their values.
