I applied through university. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at MIT (Boston, MA) in Mar 2018
Interview
Interviewed with 2 faculty members after getting accepted to the Computation for Design and Optimization Program (CDO) now rebranded and the Masters program in Computational Science and Engineering. Both faculty members were very friendly and asked about my previous research experience and how it's relevant to their work. There was also room for me to ask some questions about their research groups.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
1. Describe your previous research experience. 2. What coursework have you done in computational engineering
The departmental interview is just one round with three interviewers. In my case only one professor is really close to my research but that almost happens to everyone because not all professor you have on your list will be available. The professor who's working in my field asked more technical questions and details about my past research project, whereas two other professor mainly chatted me through their life experience and why they think MIT is a good place to go.

Question 1
Tell me about yourself. Tell me about your research interests. Why do you want to do a PhD?
I applied in-person. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at MIT (Cambridge, MA) in Jun 2022
Interview
It was a good interview. They focussed mostly on my research skills and conceptual knowledge related to the proposed research work. They asked many questions related to experimental work. Then, at the end questions were asked from motivation for the PhD position and future scope after PhD.
I applied online. I interviewed at MIT (Cambridge, MA) in Jan 2022
Interview
I chatted with the professor, and he gave me an informal offer. Discussions were about my previous research projects, and he asked me some questions. The process was smooth and pleasant.
