      Software Engineer II Interview

      6 Apr 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Mapbox in Mar 2024

      Interview

The hiring process took 1 month and included: screening interviews, behavioral interviews, technical screening with live coding, algorithmic interviews, operation experience, and, some kind of interview with a hiring manager. I would like to tell you more about those screening with life coding. This included a half-hour conversation about the basic architecture, followed by an hour of life coding. I was asked to solve a problem and I solved it in 5 minutes. But for the next hour, the conditions of this task were constantly changing and had no clear requirements. Accordingly, I tried to clarify the requirements several times, but the dissatisfied face of the interviewer pushed me away. As a result, an hour of solving the problem was accompanied by about 6 changes in the conditions of this task. Besides, the interviewer was too arrogant. He wanted to appear like a top manager of MAANG, but in fact he was just an ordinary employee of an ordinary company, just like everyone else. When I tried to express my opinion, I was immediately interrupted. There was a feeling of "If you don't agree with my opinion, then you won't get to the next stage." In the end, at the end of this interview, they let me know that I had solved the problem and they were letting me through to the next stage. The interview on algorithms seemed to me quite simple, and the interview on operational excellence was conducted with a top manager of the company, who then said that the interview was excellent. It took 4 days, and I had to write to the recruiter on my own, as they did not contact me. They responded quite promptly and assigned me the next stage with the same hiring manager. Then the most interesting thing begins. At the final interview, the hiring manager said that their selection flow is as follows: if a candidate does not pass any stage of the interview, then he is not invited to the next one. And then, of course, I was glad, because I went through all the stages. But it's too early, because in the next sentence he said that I passed the 2nd and 3rd stages perfectly, but I got a "no" on the first one. The question immediately arises: it turns out that after going through all the stages, I passed them successfully, because I would not have been invited to them, but at the same time, I did not pass the first technical stage! HOW? Further - more. I was offered to go through this stage again! On my part, the refusal to this insane offer was immediately followed. Because the process, for me personally, dragged on for too long. And besides, this sentence was said as a handout for the plebeian. After all, "you really want to work for our company." I would like to say in conclusion that this company is the most ordinary. The same as most on the market. Figure out your hiring process and make it transparent. And teach your employees not to catch stars from the sky and communicate respectfully with candidates.
