      Software Developer Interview

      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 months. I interviewed at MathWorks

      Interview

The entire process took about three months. It started with an HR call, followed by two semi-technical interviews with the manager of the team I would join. The questions focused on basic MATLAB syntax (despite the job ad mentioning that MATLAB knowledge is not required). After that, I was asked to prepare a 40-minute presentation about past projects (who has time to do such a thing when you're employed?), which I would present as part of a 4-hour interview session. During this final interview, I was also asked to implement a hash map in a language of my choice. I was then informed that the feedback following these stages was positive, and they wanted to move to the references stage before making me an offer (yes, they require references from previous companies). I was ghosted for a week after this. When following up with the recruiter, I was told there was a company-wide hiring freeze and that they would not be able to make me an offer at that point. Overall, it was a massive waste of my time.

Multiple coding assessments online, with browser use monitored to prevent cheating. The online environment had no linting or suggestions, so you need to know the correct syntax and function names for your selected programming language

      Question 1

Generally was string handling and mathematical puzzles they had contrived.

      Interview

The interview process included an initial HireVue behavioural assessment, followed by a timed technical test with algorithmic questions. After that, I had a interview where I walked through my CV and answered scenario-based questions

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

“Can you walk me through your CV and highlight the most relevant projects?” “Why are you interested in joining our organisation and this role specifically?” “Describe a time you made a mistake at work. What did you learn from it?” “What technical challenges have you faced recently, and how did you solve them?” “How do you usually gather and validate requirements from stakeholders?”
