Everybody has programming experience, you need to bring something new and unique to the table. Open floor style where you have to elevator pick yourself to mentors. Walk up and introduce yourself, its very possible to go the entire even without talking to anyone if you are shy or something. There will be ALOT of other applicants there competing so make sure to leave an impression that wont be forgotten.

There is a presentation to peers and supervisor required on a topic of my choice and its application to current computer science engineering. Relevancy, succinctness, conclusions and challenge questions were the assessment criteria.

Come on as a contract position then apply for permanent non tenure track position then can move into tenure track position in time if you have a PhD or go and enroll and get one at the Naval Postgraduate School in a department of your choice. Then as an employee you can take free courses two per quarter and get certificates or even a MSc degree. Then apply for other departments.
