      Mechanical Engineer Interview

      10 Nov 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at New Deal Design (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2021

      Interview

I had a connection here who put me in contact with a recruiter. I was then connected with an engineer from New Deal and we had a technical phone interview. Then I went into the office for an in-person interview which included a technical interview with one senior mechanical engineer. Then a soft skills interview with the HR representative and then another technical interview with the chief engineer and then a final interview with the CEO for a quick chat. The reason I did not accept the interview is because they made it very clear that mechanical engineers are very low on the totem pole here. Engineers seemed to be treated like robots to just take the Industrial Design and make it manufacturable. I am aware of this process but the senior management made it very clear that they did not want someone with their own voice or who had their own ideas. They really wanted an engineer to do exactly as they said. This is likely why most of the engineers seemed to be young and fresh out of school. There was also no option for remote work. So I felt like I would be treated like a child here and did not want to be apart of this team. This would likely be a good place for a younger engineer to get experience from senior engineers by working long hours and doing what you're told. I've already done that...

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked about the manufacturing process. From the concept to final product. I also had to sketch out a few designs we talked about.
