      Product Manager Interview

      7 Feb 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Opendoor (San Francisco, CA) in Feb 2017

      Interview

I was introduced to a recruiter via a referral, and offered the times I'm available. It appears she misread my email, since she said she'll call me during a time I'm unavailable. I corrected her, and we had an initial call on a Friday. This was very short, she didn't ask any questions nor give me a chance to ask her questions. She explained she'd follow-up over the weekend to schedule the first interview. 1 week later, I hadn't received any emails from her. I checked in with her again, she apologized for the delay. I offered the times I'm available, and she sent out a calendar invite for my first interview. Two days before the interview, she emailed me to reschedule. At this point, I had already committed to some on-site interviews so my availability was a bit wonky. Once I figured out my availability, I let her know that I could still do a phone call, or, since my on-site was in San Francisco near the Opendoor office, I could come by the meet the interviewer. I had planned to come by regardless to say hi to my referral and thank him for putting me through. She said there wouldn't be much of a need to come in for the interviewer, even though I was already planning to come by. A few days before the interview, she asked if I could also meet someone else on the team without mentioning who this person is, what their role is, or even if this would be an interview or an informal chat. I agreed and she said he'd call me on Google Hangouts. The morning with the Google Hangout with this unknown person, 10 minutes had gone by and I hadn't received any notifications. I emailed the recruiter, and she asked what link I was using... which I was confused since I wasn't provided anything. She gave me his direct phone number, and I called him. Since we only had 20 minutes, the conversation was rushed, and I didn't find the conversation particularly warm nor engaging. He had mentioned he wanted to ask me case questions but we didn't have enough time. This took me a bit by surprise since the recruiter gave me zero information as to what this call would be about. After this ended, I headed to the Opendoor office. I had a good 30-minute interview with a PM that I thought went pretty well. He was courteous of the time, and made sure he gave enough time for me to ask questions. The recruiter followed up a few days later saying that they didn't there would be a good fit for me. This was a bit frustrating since the entire process to date had been very disorganized and I didn't feel any challenging questions were asked to accurately assess my skills (relative to the questions other companies have asked).

The interview process was very long, and seemed like it could have been shorter. It’s also about three different interviews. First interview let’s call it screening, not terrible about 45 min. Then there is a follow up that’s about 3 hours.

Two phone interviews with Completely different outcomes. One of the managers led me to believe I was going to an offer. The other was not receptive at all. It’s all part of the process and I do not hold any grudges against them.
