I applied through an employee referral. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at Penn State (State College, PA) in May 2013
Interview
No "standard" interviews. Went directly to professor, talked about research and filled out paperwork to become an RA in the lab the same week. Had to complete a background check, which was completed in approximately one week
I was asked about my experience and also about my goals for my work in the lab. I also was asked about my technical competencies and abilities to code and do wetlab work.
Penn State's interview process is typically structured, starting with online applications and an initial screening of qualifications. Candidates often undergo phone or virtual interviews, followed by in-person panel interviews emphasizing structured and behavioral questions, where the STARR method is highly recommended for responses.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
tell me about yourself and why you're interested in this position
It depends. Usually they make you read relevant research papers and ask questions about them. Sometimes, they just accept you. Sometimes, they ask for recommendations from different people. Overall, if you have a previous research experience, that is the best.
