      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      7 Nov 2017
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Los Angeles, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at PlayStation (Los Angeles, CA) in Nov 2017

      Interview

Got a phone call from a Hiring manager. Asked me a few Java Spring Question. I was able to answer all of them. Then he sent me a Java coding program to complete in a day or so. I completed the coding exercise and sent him the answer. I tested the code locally using my eclipse and made sure all the scenarios that are asked for have been tested. There was one requirement where I printed the result per file. But he was expecting it to print overall. Mine was even more granular. I mentioned this in my email too and told him that I know how to do it, but in the interest of time, I am leaving the solution as is it and if needed I would change it. It was a complex program and I took time to complete it thoroughly. But the interviewer did not respond back at all. Despite me sending an email, he turned a blind eye. He did not even have the basic manner of responding to the email saying, the program was good or bad. These interviewers are too rude and egoistic and think they are the best brains in the company. They don't even have the basic etiquettes of interviewing with the aspiring candidates. I am deeply disappointed by the interview process and specially a few interviewers especially in a company like this. Horrible!!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Write a program to copy files from one directory to another recursively and replacing the content of the file using regex based on the parameters passed etc.

      Application

I interviewed at PlayStation (London, England)

      Interview

Two rounds, phone interview and then techincal screening with a member of the team. The initial phone screen felt impersonal and I don't feel like the person on the phone knew much about the role, however the technical screening was enjoyable and the interviewer was knowledgable and personable.

Based on the project I was behind hired for, what would be the first steps that I would take when I joined the team

      Interview

4.5 Stage Process for ML Dev Ops role. Every stage included initial CV overview questions. Overall took almost a month from screening call to offer. Initial "stage" was a call with their recruiter - asked about my previous experience, described the role in more detail, levelled expectations, asked about salary and general friendly banter. 1st: Senior Hiring Manager; Focused on my history related to application deployment, deploying ML models to production, CI/CD experience. Asked in detail about previous CICD setups, how we handled artefacts, where models were stored. Leetcode medium for grouping anagrams 2nd: A week later, System Design question - initially misunderstood the directive but was asked to design a complete CICD system, i.e. if Jenkins or similar didn't yet exist 3rd: Back to back with 2nd, live coding question. Not leetcode, IMO good way of measuring coding ability with real world questions 4th: Week later again, behavioural/culture interview with senior TPM. Asked for what would i do re: managing conflicts between people, vague specs from clients, how i work in a team, etc. Received the unofficial offer about 4 days later, then offer letter 3 days after that.

      Interview questions [4]

      Question 1

      1st round; Leetcode 49 - group anagrams.

      Question 2

2nd round; Design a CICD system

      Question 3

3rd round; Live coding question related to database permissions. Finish two dataclasses that represent permission groups and groups, then complete two methods in a service class that loads the permission groups from the groups, and provides method for checking permission for a single user, operation and database combination. Edge case at the end included handling recursively held groups, i.e. group a has a sub permission for group b.

      Question 4

4th round; Behavioural: Asked about managing conflicts, how to handle a vague spec from a client, how do you work in a team, what you do to mentor, describe yourself, how you’d work with a team lead, what would you do when an issue arises that might impact the timeline
