      Principal Software Engineer Interview

      19 Jul 2018
      Anonymous employee
      San Mateo, CA
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Roblox (San Mateo, CA) in Jun 2018

      Interview

A recruiter first emailed me regarding the job description and the company and discussed more on the phone. Couple days later I had a phone call with the engineering director, and was invited onsite. The first onsite was the technical part. The first two interviewers were both from facebook and the rest were also equally impressive. Two coding sections were fair and nothing too outrageous - they just need to make sure you can code as good as advertised on your resume. The design part could be tricky but if you have a good understanding of your tech stack, you should be fine; obviously you gotta know what you did according to your resume, and they drilled hard on that prospective. The second onsite invite came shortly a day after the first onsite, and was scheduled a week or so later. I met with VP of Engineering and CEO; also there were multiple teams that might be a good fit so I met with some other teams and their members. The recruiter was probably the most friendly and professional person I had a pleasure with work with throughout my career. Interview is always a drag and not fun at all, but this experience was wonderful for lack of a better word. I had couple of offers from public companies and decided to join Roblox, partly thanks to their super competitive offer, but largely due to super friendly and high-caliber colleagues, and the fact that they are eager to have you to join the journey. At the end of the day, a job is made of paychecks, but it is not paychecks but teamworks that define your career.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Basic algo and DS question. Nothing too complex. Some simple tree and DP questions. Design questions could be tricky, but if you know your fundamentals you should be fine.

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Roblox in May 2026

      Interview

The recruiter I worked with Nate Leslie. He was polite in the phone calls but the follow-ups and conversations were very poor. Lot of thrashing in emails and correspondance. Long period of silence and sudden follow ups with fast requests to interview quickly. There were time that the onsite required me to be in the office and then that was changed. The director level interview was nothing like what the recruiter said it was. He was completely wrong. NO follow up after the interview when results were not good or any feedback or suggestions. I did close to 6-7 rounds of interviews. How about a 15 min phone call to tell me what happened and why Roblox did not go with me?

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

-> Deep dive on Ads Project -> Director level was very strong behavioral mapped to company culture. -> Technical was multi-round engineering on directory folder to a LRU cache. -> Coding question got more difficult with each round including multi-threading.

      Interview

So I got an email for interview from Roblox with a recruiter. The recruiter was 5 minutes late to the meeting. But additionally, he got the wrong person to invite to the interview. He should not invite me but another person. When in the interview, the recruiter showed that he should have sent invitation to another person, because the work experience and email he mentioned are not mine. All of this was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful to candidate.
