This process was flawed, it took way too long. From the time I sent my resume and work samples to getting the gig was about 8 months. But, since it was freelance and I was working on other things, I just kept checking in. They apparently didn't read any work samples I'd sent (articles, ads) since they asked for them again. Then they sent a test... a few items from one of the catalogs for me to write copy in their style. I wrote it, they loved it. Weeks go by. But then... they said they now wanted me for a DIFFERENT catalog, they'd be sending me another test to make sure I could write in that style. I said no. I said why not hire me to write just a few things, and if they thought I didn't measure up, we could part ways? Since I would not be an employee, they'd be under no obligation. But as a pro, I said it was my job to write in any voice, I was sure I'd manage it. But no more tests. They agreed, and I wrote for them for 8 years until they shuttered after the pandemic.
It's amazing how non-writers can't understand that it's a writer's job to figure out what you need, what style you want, and then deliver. Not that hard.
