I think I submitted an application through LinkedIn and after a week or so I was invited to participate in a phone interview with the St. Marketing Director & the Sr. Art Director. Both were very nice and the interview felt less formal and more inquisitive. They decided they liked me enough for an in person interview about a week later. This was where I sat down with them, and the rest of the marketing/communications team. It was a really welcoming, cordial, comfortable setting. They had my portfolio set up on a large screen, asked me a few questions, explained the work load and expectations/typical day and then asked me for my thoughts and what drew me to apply for the position. It was a really nice concept to meet with not only your direct supervisors, but the entire team of people you’d be interacting with regularly. Everybody was great. Unfortunately, they opted for an internal candidate, which is understandable but disappointing, as they did have me do a design challenge, more or less. It’s been my experience that most places who opt for internal candidates already knew that was their person. But, it was still nice to meet everybody and they let me down easy — with kindness and respect. I would definitely apply for another position within the Y because I think it’s a good organization with a mission that I support and now I know that the team is also really great.
