I had several phone interviews - final one being with the owner whos first name was Christopher ( I will omit the last name). Back in April 2020 the company did want to hire me however due to the Covid-19 pandemic, looting taking place in NYC where Diamond District was boarded up, re-opening the office to be Covid compliant there were obvious delays in bringing me onboard which I completely understood and was willing to be patient and periodically reached out to Christopher over the months to get updates and advise him of what I was doing as I was taking on consulting positions. In Sept of 2020 Christopher called me and stated he was able to now bring me in however the job title and responsibilities had changed and he no longer wanted a Manager but a Concierge to service consumers who would be visiting the office. Okay I was willing to listen to his approach and ideas UNTIL he offered me $25 and hour off the books which I immediately declined.. First this is illegal, Second off the books means you are NOT an official employee of the company and if they decided to terminate you, you would not even be able to collect unemployment as you were never a registered employee. I waited until Oct to see if he would change his mind or come to his senses as offering a seasoned Director of CS of my experience level an off the books position was extremely unprofessional however when I did not hear back from Christopher I reported the situation to the Dept of Labor who thanked me for reporting the problem and that they would be looking into the situation. Of course this is all confidential so I never found out what happened with the outcome. I do WARN any individual to be extremely cautious with this company for if they can offer you a position off the books which is illegal.....what else are they doing internally that is also illegal. One illegal action is ALWAYS followed by more illegal activity.
