The first round is an HR Interview, I thought they would just ask you some resume questions. Didn't expect some stat brain teaser problems. Three basic statistic problems: objective function of linear regression, expectation and variance, a coin tossing problem and ask you to identify the distribution.

Get ready for 2 hours of mind-numbing data exercise for the onsite that should have been a take-home assignment. The interviewer was not interested in collaborating or explaining the problem. They shared a 1 pager of questions and a dataset that is not even related to loan or finance and expected a thorough discussion AND a full model with code. All that on top of engaging with the interviewer for the entire 2 hours. Please do both the interviewers and your candidates a favor and get rid of this interview format. No interview (especially remote) should last for more than an hour because no one can hold their attention that long.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Upstart in Aug 2021
Interview
Overall good. Interviewers are very nice, they did a good job guiding you through the problems. Some coding questions are unnecessarily hard for a data scientist role based on the fact that they have MLE and research scientist to do modeling jobs.
