      Assistant Store Manager Trainee Interview

      18 Jun 2016
      Anonymous employee
      Denver, CO
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Walgreens (Denver, CO) in Jun 2016

      Interview

You meet up at the store with the Store Manager and a Store Manager from another store. A little bit of small talk and then straight to the questions (10), which are all Behavioral questions. You're always supposed to answer according to the STAR/SHARE method. From what I researched and my own experience, it is pretty structured so you have a good chance to nail it if you prepare properly.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

question 0: Why Walgreens? It's an easy one, be sure to nail it. 1- Describe a time when you had to explain (the organization) policies to a difficult client who didn't want to listen 2 - Describe a time when you had to deal with a hostile client 3 - Describe a time when your team members didn't want to collaborate to do a task, what did you do and what were the results. 4 - Describe a time when you had to talk to a team member to let him/her know that you were getting customer's complaints (something like that) 5 - Describe a time when you had to work on a large project and you didn't have enough manpower, what did you do 6 - Describe a time you had a short deadline in a long process, how did you solve it. 7 - Describe the most difficult decision you had to take in your organization. 8 - Describe a time when you had to give feedback to a team member, how did you do it and what were the results. 9- Describe a time when you use competition as a motivating tool without creating rough spots among the team 10- Describe a time when you introduced changes in your job policies to get some improvement, what motivated you and what were the results.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Walgreens

      Interview

I initially applied for the position directly on their website the 2nd week of July. The application process consists of an assessment. Once that is passed, you will receive an email fairly quickly (I believe I got mine within two hours of completing the application/assessment), to do a virtual interview. The virtual interview consists of 5 questions. The questions have to be answered in STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) or SBO (Situation, Behavior, Outcome) format. This part takes about 30 minutes to complete. Once that interview is complete, it is sent to the hiring store manager to review. This part took the longest. It took about 10 days for the store manager to contact me for an interview. After the store manager contacts you, an email is sent out reminding you of the interview time, date, location and store manager's name. I interviewed with the hiring manager and another store manager and it felt more like a conversation than an interview. An advantage I had was that I had experience working with a competitor in a similar position so I fell into the lingo very quickly. If you don't have this experience, work with what you have - have a real conversation; smile; MAKE EYE CONTACT (this is very important). The interview consists of 10 behavioral questions and they are all centered around Walgreens core values (make sure to take a look at the pdf that is sent in the email reminding you about the in-person interview - it is pretty helpful) and the job description. They want to know how you have handled certain experiences in the past. It is imperative that you have examples ready to share because you are graded on a scale of 1-5 and that score determines if you get the job. The interview should have lasted only an hour, but we talked a lot about the job and it lasted 1.5 hours- I talked a lot about my past experiences working with a similar company - and we all hit it off really well. I was for sure I had the job at that point but she told me she had another candidate to interview after me. When you interview by having a conversation, it takes the jitters out of the traditional stale interview style. A lot of their questions and questions you may have about the company can be answered in casual conversation. At the end when they asked if I had any questions, I only had 1-2 because we talked so much throughout the interview that a lot of my questions were already answered. The store manager said she would reach back out to me by the end of the week. I received the call the next day with the job offer! The next step is to look out for the email with the offer letter and accept it. I will have a background check and drug test done, but that is standard of almost all companies. As compared to the competitor I worked for, Walgreens interview process is a lot better and I like how the store manager was empowered to hire the ASM for her store.
