I applied online. I interviewed at Zeeto in Oct 2020
Interview
I went to on-line screen - answering 9 Data Science questions
on a computer screening system; I liked that experience,
as you could correct (re-record) your answers, and you feel
more relaxed.
There was a challenge after the screen - I had to spend a week
doing this challenge; I have achieved 90% model accuracy;
I felt that the bulk of work had been done.
The dataset had 300,000 records, and it took 40 hours to train the model.
In Jupyter Notebook I went through the solution in very detail,
and I have explained next steps, etc.
I had to present my findings to the team of three -
first 30 minutes were more introductory behavioral questions.
I felt that I addressed most questions they asked about the project -
if I did not have a quick answer for some,
then I could address them later; that was my understanding,
since I had to be more involved with their line of business.
I felt that my presentation went well - I showed the result.
I have noticed few red flags though
- The team, especially the hiring manager, did not show any support; she
wore that stone face throughout the presentation,
and it made me feel very uneasy; it especially hurts when you do not
meet people in person and see them for the fist time
- HR team did not do any screening, no question about salary expectation, etc.
I had to wait for the response for 7 days, and HR did not bother
to set up a call, just an email response to my request for feedback.
He said something about "going in different direction" and that
they are small (salary expectation?), and when I asked for
a more substantial feedback, I have got some frivolous rejection reasons.
Total waste of my time
I applied online. The process took 3 days. I interviewed at Zeeto (San Diego, CA)
Interview
Staffs were very kind. One of the HR showed around the office and explained all the benefits an employee gets (including breakfast and lunch bar) The company's atmosphere seemed cool. There were 2 interviewers asking casual questions.
I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Zeeto (San Diego, CA) in Dec 2015
Interview
Zeeto's internal recruiter contacted me from LinkedIn and setup a phone interview with a couple people. After that you're asked to complete a coding practical. It's actually quite complex and you're expected to spend 5-6 hours of your free time working on it. Once that is done you're brought in on site to meet with several team members for about a 2.5 hour interview. Questions were not difficult and I answered most fairly easily. After a few days I was informed that my salary demands were too high. My salary requirement was known from the very first conversation.
My personal thoughts: In retrospect I should have bailed out of this process at the mention of a 5 hour coding practical. I typically refuse these and move on to the next opportunity. However, I was very unhappy at my current job and made an exception in this case. Zeeto is a startup and it seems like they're after younger developers who they can pay less. The only positive was that they use their own employees for recruitment and my contact was very professional, nice and responsive. However, overall this was one of the more frustrating interview processes I've ever been through. I very much regret the Saturday I lost working on their coding practical and will never agree to a coding practical ever again unless I am financially compensated.
Zeeto seems like a great place to work. I was treated professionally by everyone I met with. However, I feel the interview process is unfair and beyond reasonable.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
What could you have done to improve your coding practical if you had more time?
Thank you for your response and honest feedback. We are constantly reviewing our process and making changes when necessary. Coding projects most likely won't be going away as we feel this is the best way for someone to showcase their skills, however, we will continue to work at offering transparent communication on what to expect.
