I had a first level interview that validated my reason for applying to the role, since it matched what I expected from the company and reflected what I had already done in my career. The role was for a Head of Marketing position, which usually requires around 6 to 8 years of experience, but I brought more than 15. I assumed that would be a strength, especially since my career, qualifications, and experience aligned well with the key challenges described in the job.
That is why the rejection was so disappointing. It was reduced to a single sentence saying that other candidates were a better match for the current requirements, without explaining what in my background did not align with the expectations set out in the job description. For a senior role, that kind of wording feels generic and reductive. Candidates are expected to make a strong and specific case for themselves, while the rejection gives nothing back beyond a template style statement, even though companies often say they are looking for unique and innovative people
