      Track Engineer Interview

      10 Aug 2022
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Long Beach, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at skyTran (CA) (Long Beach, CA) in May 2022

      Interview

It is truly unfortunate to give a negative review, but I would like to help others' decision process and manage their expectations. It is great at the beginning, if you are at least an average engineer. Then, radio silence and GHOST YOU. I really hope it is just the timing for the company that did it, rather than anything else, I wish I could find out what I did wrong, and I would love to work for them for the mag-lev technologies in the future. But going for FOUR ROUNDS of interviews and getting ghosted is not acceptable. No one deserves that. (However, I understand). The screening is done via e-mail, and the recruiter is very kind and helpful. All interviews were done via Teams because I am not in CA. The first interview was with the track engineering manager (who seems to be a very cool person), 30 minutes, mostly about your background and company, and he will ask you to solve a problem, it is about laser tracker. Even if you don't have experience, know basic physics and you will be ok, don't panic, take your time. Then you will have a two hours exam within a few days after that as the 2nd round. They will tell you upfront they are not expecting you to finish the exam, they want to know your thought process, and it includes basic structures design & analysis, GD&T, sizing, and DFM problems. Later day, there will be a review interview with a project manager, they will go through your thought process with you, and ask you more background questions. This did not go as well as I wished, because I had to admit my mistakes on the exam, but hey, two hours is nothing for engineering projects, I wish they gave you at least 24 hours to complete. Then they wanted another interview with two engineers/engineering managers from another department. Mostly background and behavior questions, and we were smiling the whole time, sure, I may have said a thing or two I should not have said because I was nervous, but I do not remember anything negative. It took me a month and a half to get through four interviews, spent many hours prepping and doing the exam, I fixed the exam after the hours afterward because I wanted to show them I know how to fix my mess-ups (not sure it mattered), but long story short, I put many hours for Skytran's interview process. Still a start-up company after all. Best wishes, but I am afraid I am no longer interested. I believe if you are 120% fit for what they are looking for, you would probably have a better interview process than I did. So do not feel discouraged by my review Just know I went through what I went through. Also, I really hope Skytran members see this post, and change their way for the better, so you would have fewer negative reviews like this one!! Best wishes, Skytran. Thank you.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Basic engineering background/experience questions. Laser tracker engineering problem (think GD&T and geometry even if you never used tracker before). 2 hours exam mentioned. More personal/background/experience/behavial questions.
