      Interview

The process: They give you a C++ homework assignment where you need to implement one function of a template class using `std::map` representation. The constraints of the template arguments are clearly defined, and they specify other expectations, such as algorithm complexity. You have 9 hours to finish it once you start. The task is moderately difficult, but an experienced developer can pull it off within 2-3 hours, including tests. When you are ready, you need to copy the body of the function to a form on their webpage and test if it can be compiled in their environment. You can do this as many times as you wish. Then you submit your solution, and their system performs the tests. If it fails, you have one more chance. The system doesn't give you any feedback on what went wrong. After your second failed submission, you'll be finally informed about the evaluation method. They say that they can't give you feedback at all because of the large number of candidates, and it wouldn't be fair to other applicants. Pros: - Quick responses from HR. - Working on the task was pretty fun. - Good lesson on what kind of company to avoid in the future. Cons: - The given data structure is not ideal for the problem; at least it's not in line with the member function you need to implement. It caused me to have a nagging thought that I would use another representation. It looks like they had the represantation first, then tried to add a more or less meaningful function to it. It's good for a test, but they claim that they are using this one in production code. - No salary information, just a 'click-bait' promise (130K USD) that will be fulfilled after 1 year -- this should have been a red flag. - No prior information about evaluation process. - No feedback. - Lack of transparency -- candidates can't be sure if their automated evaluating system is working at all. You can't see how many tests you have passed and how many are left. - Maximum 2 submissions. Summary: Although they claim that they are doing fair evaluation, they are not. They do equal evaluation, equally disrespectful to each and every applicant. If you expect the candidate to take a 3 to 9-hour assignment, detailed feedback is a bare minimum -- correct companies put the same effort into an interview as the candidate. Telling the assessment method *after* the submission could not be further from being fair. Having no time for feedback due to large number of applicants is not an argument. They sould triage on CVs and conduct professional interviews. Recruiters and HR personnel tend to forget these days that the selection process is bilateral. The interview process clearly shows what a candidate can expect from the company later, and this story is full of red flags.

Dear Candidate, Thank you for your constructive feedback on our recruiting process and sharing your personal experience. Regarding lack of feedback – It is true that we cannot address all feedback requests, this information is available on our career page under the application process - https://www.think-cell.com/en/career/application. We are trying to tackle this issue though. The test will be compromised if we give detailed feedback. In most cases, we point out areas where one could improve their understanding. Of course, we understand that it may not be satisfactory. Salary Information– Interns earn between 75k-90k Euros and fulltime developer earn from 90k Euros onwards, with a guaranteed increase to 130K Euros after their first year of employment with us. This information is also available on our career page. We strongly believe in equal opportunity and unbiased approach in our recruiting policy. Every applicant needs to get an opportunity to attempt the challenge irrespective of their qualification /experience. We would be missing out on great developers whom we currently have if we had to triage CV’s and conduct professional interviews. Not everyone is eloquent. It can be a trade-off, but it works for us. We wish you all the very best in your future endeavors. Kind regards think-cell HR team.

      Interview

After spending hours to do a test - they reject the application without even bothering providing feedback (and that despite the fact the test was well done and passing all the tests) - that is not a professional behavior and lacks respect for the time people invest in the process.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and feedback. We’re sorry to hear that you found the process frustrating, especially considering the time and effort you invested. We understand how important it is for candidates to feel that their work is acknowledged and respected. We understand that not receiving detailed feedback can create the impression that your effort was not fully recognized. However, providing specific feedback on the assessment would compromise the integrity of our evaluation process and our ability to apply it consistently to all candidates. We appreciate your understanding in this regard. Best regards, People Team

First it was a coffee chat and then a 10h technical assesment, without any feedback for their side. It was frustrating because after investing a lot of time, they don't even tell you nothing.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and feedback. We’re sorry to hear that the process felt frustrating. We aim to create a recruitment experience that is both fair and respectful of candidates’ time. Our technical test is designed to assess problem-solving skills in a realistic way and help us identify the strong technical abilities required to maintain the high standards of think-cell’s products. The platform allows up to 10 hours to complete the task to give candidates flexibility, for example to take breaks if needed. In practice, many candidates complete and submit their solutions within around 2–4 hours. Regarding feedback, we also understand that not receiving detailed comments on a submission can feel disappointing. Unfortunately, providing specific feedback on the assessment would compromise the integrity of our evaluation process and our ability to continue using this test consistently with all candidates. We appreciate your understanding on this matter. Best regards, People Team
