To be sentient is to be aware, and to be Sentient is to be aware of a market niche in private jet transportation. Unlike charter jet users, Sentient Flight Group customers pay a membership fee in advance for guaranteed access to aircraft. With fractional jet ownership, customers buy a portion of a jet and then pay for flight expenses; Sentient member-customers pay for flight time only. Customers choose types of jets (light, midsize, super-mid, heavy) rather than individual aircraft. The jets are flown by independent operators. Once a part of Sentient Jet Holdings, the company was purchased in August 2008 by Macquarie Global Opportunities Partners, a fund managed by global investment firm Macquarie Group.
