Pros

Exposure to the leveraged finance space and data-driven approaches to credit analysis. Some talented and well-meaning colleagues outside the ESG vertical who are generous with their knowledge and time. The potential to contribute to a growing fintech.

Cons

Micromanagement & nitpicking: The work environment, particularly within the ESG function, felt tightly controlled with little room for autonomy. Excessive focus on minor issues often overshadowed meaningful contributions. Lack of empathy: During a time of severe illness — later diagnosed as tuberculosis — I was met with comments from HR such as “How long will we wait for you?” rather than basic compassion. For a company operating in ESG, the disconnect between external messaging and internal culture was stark and painful. Emotionally immature leadership in ESG: A serious deficit of emotional intelligence within the ESG team’s leadership. Difficult conversations were handled poorly, and psychological safety was not prioritised. Repetitive work: Tasks often felt monotonous, with limited opportunities for creativity, ideation, or strategic thinking. Low impact and lack of inspiration: Despite the buzzwords, there is a vacuum when it comes to truly innovative thinking or visionary leadership. The ESG vertical, in particular, seemed performative rather than purposeful.

The health and wellbeing of our employees is something we take seriously, and we strive to support our team members during difficult times. While I cannot discuss individual circumstances in detail, I want to clarify that when employees face health challenges, we make every effort to provide appropriate support, including access to private health insurance and Employee Assistance Support. We always offer occupational health assessments to support smooth transitions back to work after long term sickness, these are always subject to employee agreement and we can't force individuals to participate in this process. The People team hold ourselves to very high standards when it comes to supporting employee health. In our most recent employee engagement survey we scored 89/100 for Balance & Wellbeing and are confident this reflects how we uphold our value of Family & Health Come First. I am confident in this case that the People team did everything possible to support you to rest, recover and return to work. I'm sorry to hear that you do not feel you received everything you needed. Pros

Good exposure to leveraged finance markets and credits, generous work from abroad and work from home policy,

Cons

Horrible pay, but culture in ESG team was particularly horrible. Micromanagement and nitpicking of juniors was very common. Lack of emotional intelligence and emotional maturity. Backstabbing. Lack of trust. Zero sum game kind of attitude, win at the expense of others. Made me feel so uncomfortable and suffocated while working with the ESG team.

Pros

They've found a good market for, clearly doing something right. The product ideas themselves are great, they have the right people to sell and grow the customers base - lots of well networked people within the target audience. Benefits are good. The people team were decent, though were starting to look a little more traditional HR as the company grew. If you want to hack features out without being expected to do all the "boring" stuff and join the hype train it can be a fun place.

Cons

Engineering standards are poor, and the leadership don't seem to have much background in high quality engineering. They say they're a tech company, but not really. A good product company hacking around to get features out. Still behaving like an early stage startup, not like a tech company in 2025. Feature factory stuff. Processes are poor. No alignment on DevOps practices, things like observability are given little thought, or at least receive no priority from leadership. Lack of strategic planning, and no real consideration for architectural thinking. Some engineers and managers seem to want to improve this but they're squashed by short term thinking and hype. It's a bit cult like. You have to love the hype and join it, or you'll just be seen as a downer. You'll be happier if you just accept the bad practice and cheer along, because trying to improve things is just too frustrating. You'll be more celebrated this way too. Privately people will discuss everything that's not going well, but publicly it's best to fall in line with the hype train. A lot of it feels very fake. The senior leadership in tech lack hands on skills, but want to tell you how it's done... Lip service around "what makes us a great employer". Seen it with a couple of things - saying all the right things publicly, but then unwilling to back it up when it affects your staff.

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. We’re proud of what we’ve built, but we know there’s still a lot of work ahead, especially as we grow. This year, we’ve been focused on levelling up our tech function by bolstering our engineering leadership and team structure.
