Pros

I am currently finishing up my degree online and flying as an SIC at AB Jets. The job itself gives me a lot of free time to manage my degree while building valuable experience in the right seat of a Learjet 31A and the 55. Before joining the company I was flight instructing, now I'm flying to different destinations and enjoying the views with great captains by my side. Every flight is different and the equipment is an absolute blast to fly.

Cons

Being on call is the toughest part of the job. When you're on call you'll never know when you'll get called or where to, so it's hard to plan around sometimes.

Pros

Great people all looking out for each other. You take care of business for them and they will take care of you when you need it. Hard work is rewarded and recognized. Management desires this to be the best small operator in the business. Very little non-flying responsibilities for most employees unless desired. Set schedule with hard days off known well in advance and respected--a rarity in this business. Opportunity to earn extra compensation on off days. Well maintained aircraft. Knowledgeable maintenance staff able to answer questions you may have on the road. Beautiful, updated interiors. Great client base that respects the pilots and their decision making. No pressure on unsafe missions. Always (where physically possible) separate rooms at Hilton or Marriott properties and you keep the points. Good variety of destinations and trips with high profile clients, business trips, and medical flights. Ability to pick your lifestyle to consist of more day trips or longer stints away from base with the LRJET and Lear 60 programs.

Cons

It is "ON DEMAND" charter. The nature of the business is that things change rapidly. If you are not ready for that it can be a culture shock. You have to have a bag packed and be ready to go on a short notice whether it's for an out and back trip or a weeklong stay. This makes planning things in your personal and family life, even dinner, difficult outside of your scheduled days off. There are also a substantial number of flights on the backside of the clock. It is a lifestyle and rhythm that is learned and definitely takes some getting used to. Flight planning is the pilot's responsibility and this can add to the pressure of short call flights.
