Pros
A19 occupies a very important place in the freedom of expression (FoE) sphere, whether it be in its in-country programmes (protection of journalists, media freedom, access to information, digital rights, and civic space protection) or in its international influence (advocacy, policy, standard-setting). This affords its staff an excellent opportunity to get some real work done and gain valuable work experience. The staff is made of highly experienced and qualified professionals, many of whom sacrificed higher-paid jobs to be there. They are committed and passionate. With that being said, the pay and benefits are very competitive, and the management really cares about staff well-being. Overall, an excellent place to work.
Cons
The organisation has undergone massive growth in recent years and therefore is experiencing growing pains with regard to internal systems. There is a limited possibility of growth within the organisation. A lot of the workstreams are siloed off from each other and either thematically or regionally specific, which also prevents moving around within the organisation.
