Pros

Good work life balance (easy hours) Most staff at at a lower-mid level are friendly and make being at work very easy. Get to see some amazing projects be built infront of your very eyes

Cons

Upper management is a boys club. They don't reward ability but rather promote there mates. During a period of uncertainty before new projects were finalised (SEA1000 and Future Frigates) , upper management intentionally treated lower level staff poorly to force them to leave so the company could avoid redundancies. (Poor pay increase, no promotions, forced relocation within the company). As a result, they have lost many of their best staff. Many staff are too comfortable and don't add value to the company. They have worked there for 20+ years and get paid too much to do nothing.

Management Troubles

Pros

Autonomy Working in a dynamic, complex project environment amongst highly skilled and talented individuals achieving the impossible within tight deadlines. Due to the Defence environment, you can't take your work home.

Cons

Most managers have either been with the company too long or are ex-military and stuck in their draconian ways. Limited career development. Current CEO has no previous CEO experience and this shows in his (lack of) management style. People that run against the grain are either belittled or pushed aside. No recognition or reward of staff by management. Staff pay rises are generally below CPI (1-2%) over the past 2 years. Skilled staff are leaving (either voluntarily or through redundancy).

Pros

ASC offers a salary that is 10-20% higher than other companies in the engineering field, but the trade-offs may not be worth it.

Cons

ASC has one of the most challenging engineering environments I’ve encountered in my career. There is little collaboration within the Engineering departments and across the company as a whole. Space is limited, so don't expect to have a desk or a dedicated place to sit. The office is outdated, noisy, and not particularly functional. The IT systems are disjointed, difficult to use, and poorly integrated, making it challenging to access the information necessary for your work. The company’s "quality" policies create a false sense of confidence in its processes. In reality, they allow a few decision-makers to hold the company back, as they are too proud to accept better alternatives. Before accepting an engineering job here, consider whether it's worth the potential cost to your well-being, both financially and mentally.
