If you’re a marginalized person, I wouldn’t recommend considering working on the engineering team until there is officially a clear and structured career ladder with pay bands. While the person that managed the team for years is no longer managing it due to failing to support and treat everyone equally or with respect, the culture they created still lingers as the new manager works on fixing it. Everyone is afraid to ask (even teammates) questions in fear of being berated for not knowing the answer already or being called names, there’s no reward for consistently going above and beyond, and firefighting is valued more than proactively preventing situations where firefighting is needed.
