Avoid if you are a minority

Pros

flexible work life and wonderful mission.

Cons

This non-profit serves a high percentage of children of color, and claims to support communities of color. However they are known for NOT hiring minorities and for not promoting people of color to senior positions. People of color are let go often for all sorts of reasons. It is all done in a quiet systemic way. They were never truly appreciated while white employees get all the glory. If you support this non-profit, do your homework. You will see these issues are as clear as day. They claim to support people of color, but nothing can be further from the truth.

Pros

The vision of improving out of school time learning make sense.

Cons

They treat you better if you are white. They pretend to care about people of color but it’s all for show. They treat white people so much better and give them more opportunities. They replace minorities on a whim and replace them with less qualified non minorities because the CEO feels more comfortable with white leaders. If you are a person of color and seeking opportunities for vertical growth- look somewhere else. Look at their senior leadership and their board and ask yourself if this reflects diversity. Their ceo is only interested in herself and her image and is clueless about running a nonprofit.

The CEO should step down

Pros

Unlimited PTO, flexible working hours. You get to meet and work with great people who are passionate about the mission.

Cons

This is one of the most unstable environments I’ve ever worked in which is weird for a non profit. There are org changes nearly every year where people are let go. The executive leadership is not transparent about why they do this. For a non profit that likes to talk about serving underprivileged communities they focus on revenue as a #1 goal a little too much. The executive leadership has no empathy for their employees who work hard to serve their mission. They also play favorites and things go south quick when you say something they may disagree with. I’ve had 4 new managers in the short time I’ve worked here. But the one thing that stays the same is the culture. Rather than create a clear vision for BellXcel, the CEO constantly blames employees for her lack of strategy.
