Pros

Cool office Really smart coworkers Unlimited PTO

Cons

- Engineers beware sprint system here is by far the worst setup I’ve experienced at a tech company. They’ve completely weaponized the point system, which killed any meaningful form of collaboration (everyone’s on a time crunch here to make sure they get enough points). Watched a lot of software engineers get burned out in just months of working here. - Fiserv acquisition destroyed what was left of this place feeling anything like a start up. A lot of the original members of Bento (now in middle / higher management positions) completely checked out. Coming in as a engineer wanting to grow in your career and then having people with a “rest and vest” mind set leading us made this job quickly start feeling like a dead end.

We are sorry to hear you did not get what you were hoping for out of your BentoBox experience. To address your comments around the sprint system and burnout, we'd like to share that our Engineering team's average monthly retention rate for the last 12 months is 97.8%. You're correct, our engineering team does work incredibly hard. On average, our teams exceed their point goals by 12% monthly. We could easily use this stat to raise the bar, but instead, we choose not to because of the exact concerns you are raising - we value our engineers very much, and preventing burnout is top of mind for us. We utilize this industry standard sprint system because we believe that better planning results in better execution. It aids in time management, holds each team member accountable for their share of the work, removes bias from performance review conversations, and of course, hopefully, ensures no one is being overworked. Thanks for hearing us out and we wish you the best of luck in your next endeavor.

Pros

Unlimited PTO, engineers are nice

Cons

The sprint system is incredibly strict. I've seen many engineers burn out here. Its tough to ask questions to other engineers because everyone seems to be on a time crunch.

Thank you for your feedback - we are sorry to hear that you were feeling over-extended during your time at BentoBox. To speak to your thoughts about the sprint system - our sprints are industry standard. Engineers estimate and plan work, and then within their teams decide together how much can be accomplished in a given sprint. Managers do hold teams accountable for their commitments, but the workload is mainly driven from the bottom up. That said, estimating and planning work is a skill that takes practice - we have shared this feedback with our Engineering Managers so that they can take steps to ensure that everyone feels properly equipped to advocate for themselves during sprint planning.

Pros

The other reps were the highlight.

Cons

I wanted to write this not to bash, but to inform people looking to get into sales at BentoBox. I really enjoyed the job at first, I felt like it was a company really trying to provide honest solutions for people. My experience changed pretty drastically when the curtain started to roll back. Like some of the other reviews here, there was no direction from sales leadership, and our game plan changed what seemed to be weekly. There seemed to be a holier than thou attitude about the product from leadership, which was absolutely not the case out in the field. The product was overpriced, and had hardly any relevant updates that would actually benefit customers. On top of that, if customers were to sign up, most of the time would never launch (which you get dinged for as a rep) because onboarding dropped the ball time and time again. The quota was completely unattainable, and they used “other” data to make it seem like things are going great. It astounded me that leadership never addressed the glaring problems, which was onboarding, and the overall product (price, capabilities, etc.), but rather chalked it up to people not making enough calls. Times are changing in the space that BentoBox works in, and they are not making any adjustments to meet that, which make the product almost impossible to sell. It got to a point where I didn’t feel good about what I was selling, especially when leadership is pushing up-selling products that people don’t need so our numbers look a little better. Overall, I have never in my professional career been so stressed, and lost in a job as I was here. It’s a shame because there are a lot of good employees at the company who are willing to do whatever to help, but everybody has a limit. Take this review as you will, I’d encourage anyone to make the best decision for themselves whether that is Bento or not, but wanted to give some insight to my experience and hopefully help the next person making this decision.

We appreciate this thoughtful feedback and recognize that it's coming from a good place. I hope you were able to voice these challenges during your tenure - I know that our sales leaders are always open to input, even if it's not possible to implement suggestions right away. With that said, we've made changes to our 2023 plan to simplify the sales role, and make changes to customer onboarding so that sellers can do what they do best. We wish you lots of luck in your new position!
