Expectations from upper level management are ridiculous. I heard many instances of people not being able to make it safely to work due to poor road conditions and weather and calling out because of it, then getting in trouble. I once mentioned I almost ran off the road because of ice and got laughed at. Several of my friends there have become physically ill from the stress of working there, but management does not care and instead guilts employees to come to work where we were ALWAYS short staffed— not by one or two people either. They expected us to run the store with 3 employees until 7-8 AM more than once while I was there. I also believe the company itself is not as honest as they’d have you believe. There were many times we ran out of certain size cups due to supply issues out of our control, but we found some locally from restaurant supply stores. The only issue is these cups were smaller than what we advertised and charged for. When customers commented that it looked different, we were instructed to lie about it and could not tell them that it was smaller, but it was the best we could do. Another day, our espresso machine in the drive thru broke— rather than allow us to shut down the drive thru for a day or two until it was fixed, corporate forced us to make ALL the drinks in the cafe, which resulted in poor quality, much higher stress, and unhappy customers. I was also told multiple times I would never be considered for supervisor because I did not intend to stay after I finished college, despite being there for a year. Another instance, a supervisor told me in essence that my mental health didn’t matter and to “get over it” and do my job.
