Pros

Finally handing in my resignation

Cons

I have never worked under a leader as ineffective as the Director of Executive Learning in Brisbane. The leadership style can best be described as all authority and no leadership. Strategic thinking, planning, problem solving and day-to-day operational management are pushed onto staff, while management appears more focused on reminding employees who is in charge than actually providing direction. Communication is consistently poor. Simple questions requiring clarification are often met with defensiveness, hostility or disproportionate escalation. Conversations that should take five minutes can quickly become unnecessarily confrontational. Rather than creating an environment where staff feel comfortable raising concerns, there is a culture of intimidation where employees learn very quickly to stop asking questions. The recruitment process and the reality of the role were worlds apart. What was presented as a professional project and events position became a role involving significant manual labour, furniture moving, physical setup work and tasks well outside what many would reasonably expect. When concerns were raised, they were dismissed. The treatment of female staff was particularly concerning. Professional communication and reasonable requests for clarification were too often met with criticism rather than constructive discussion. Respect seemed conditional on agreeing without question. The most disappointing aspect of the experience was HR. After reporting serious concerns, including issues affecting my wellbeing, the response was slow, dismissive and ultimately ineffective. The process felt designed to protect management rather than investigate concerns or support employees. By the end, it became clear that raising issues was largely a waste of time. This workplace talks about values, wellbeing and culture, but my experience was the complete opposite. Poor leadership, poor communication, poor accountability and an HR function that appears unwilling to challenge management behaviour. I would strongly recommend looking elsewhere before accepting a position within the Brisbane Executive Learning team. Do not be fooled in your interview, stay away.
