Corporate, cold and clueless

Pros

TV studio located in a nice area of Dublin.

Cons

Senior management have no humanity or respect for creatives. The pay is the lowest in the irish industry and quite often staff are expected to work late for no extra pay. Very high security and little trust for employees (ie fingerprint scanners on all doors, clocking in systems that monitor every minute you work, being scolded if breaks run over a few minutes) Simply put, there is no heart at the centre of this company. If you are considering a job at this studio, you need to ask yourself why you got into this industry in the first place. If it was to follow a creative path, or create some art of worth to share with the world, avoid this studio at all costs. Boulder Media is the ugly face of the modern industry and is a prime example of what happens when a once creative studio is hijacked by corporate CEOs and con artists masquerading as producers.

Pros

Lot of talented, friendly people who really make the studio what it is. The facilities are very nice. Attains high profile shows. Staff parties are the best and they do small gestures for the sake of morale.

Cons

However, the gestures to boast morale is to counter the depression people experience working there. VERY restrictive creatively. The shows are extremely over produced (very clumsily), staff are not respected by upper management and micro management is rampant. You will be scapegoated. You will be under paid. You may not receive credits for your work. I was severely depressed working for the company and I don't know if I would ever be interested in returning. Having said that, there are multiple shows in production at the same time and your experience highly depends on what show you are on and who you are working with. Accepting a job in BM is a gamble. I had some good experiences there on productions but it was vastly out shadowed by the negative.

Pros

- Wonderfully talented and friendly art team. - Flexible working hours are very handy. - Great social events - The shows do look polished - Good place to start out of university

Cons

- The pay is abysmal, especially considering this studio is in Dublin, a city infamous for its sky high rent prices. When I joined I was told that pay was reviewed annually. This did not happen once. - Not much chance of advancing your career within the company - The production and management teams can be painfully uncoordinated and vague with little briefing or instruction. They can sometimes even be manipulative. - Can be expected to work late/ work weekends with no extra pay. - Creative liberty is very limited due to working for a large corporation which cares mainly for product sales. The cartoons you make are basically adverts for toys. Just know what you're getting into. - Training promises go unfulfilled - Work wears you down and makes you depressed so that at the end of the work day you have no fervour for working on personal art to be used for portfolio, so you can start feeling trapped.
