    I worked at CERN full-time

    Pros

This is THE place to be for physics! As a summer student you get to not only work with amazing physics at one of the world's most amazing experiments, you also get to share this experience with others who are as passionate about their subjects as you are.

    Cons

I don't really think there were any downsides to the Summer student programme, perhaps that it is only available for a limited time.

    Advice to Management

I'm not sure what to write in this section, I think the Summer student team did a really good job at organising this programme.

I worked at CERN full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    * CERN is a melting pot for great passionate people you can learn from
    * I had many opportunities to go to conferences to listen to and give talks which was supported by management
    * People are open to new ideas and even on a short term contract I had a lot of influence on technical decisions made
    * The hierarchy within my group was no barrier, I could easily talk to my boss and his boss if I had a problem

    Cons

    * Some of the systems have a lot of history and therefore a lot of technical weight (legacy code)
    * The system of contract types and the opportunities to change between them is too rigid. For example there is no natural transition from a Fellow contract to a staff contract.

Thank you for your review and for the positive feedback! we are pleased you got so much out of your fellowship at CERN. For what concerns there being no natural 'transition' between contracts, CERN... More

    I worked at CERN full-time

    Pros

Cutting-edge science research organization, doing a lot of innovation inside

    Cons

Some jobs not related to physics feel sometimes just as services for Physicists.
Some tests made by nerd managers in recruitment processes could have nothing to do with the position, you can find physics, chemistry or math questions.

I have been working at CERN full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good working environment, flexible hours, cutting edge technologies, 30 days of holidays, diversity

    Cons

Not really have to report any negatives. Actually depends on the section, because it is a huge organisation

I have been working at CERN full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good salary and pension if you can get a staff position

    Cons

Overwhelmingly male work environment which makes it deathly boring, dull and lacking in stimulation. Most women work in relative isolation unless you are in HR.

    Advice to Management

Fire most of the section leaders and group leaders who have absolutely no clue about team leading or diversity since they are virtually all white, male, heterosexual and just going through the motions of leading.

I worked at CERN full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - International environment
    - Salary
    - A lot of young people, many eager to give their best.
    - You have a lot to say in your team, your role, how you want to work... You are given a lot of responsability

    Cons

    - Very team dependant: The experience can vary greatly depending on the team, more specifically boss, that you have.
    - Lack of organization inside teams. Results highly dependant on individual talent.
    - Sometimes there are too many people coming and going (trainees, fellows), a lot of talent lost.

    Advice to Management

    - Critical teams should have more permanent staff
    - Needs more inside-the-team checks not to be so dependant on individual talent.

I have been working at CERN full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great place to work
    Prestige
    -Productive but not stressful atmosphere
    -Regular training opportunities
    -Benefits

    Cons

-Only Fixed-Term contracts with little prospects of renewal
-Sometimes you are learning-using very CERN-specific technologies with little "market value"
    -Huge organization = cumbersome management

    Advice to Management

Rotating people so fast results in know-how being lost

I worked at CERN (More than a year)

    Pros

There are a LOT of awesome things to hear about and understand in CERN. There are very specific use cases, the technologies used are super varied. Definitely a great experience!

    Cons

Since it is pretty complicated to make updates, there is some amount of legacy code and it can be hard to move everything to newer technologies.
