Former Employee - Data Scientist in London, England

I worked at Channel 4 full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The junior and mid-level staff are very talented and friendly people.

    Cons

Extremely unprofessional and unpleasant behavior by a senior member of staff there. This includes, - Swearing - Bullying - Public shaming - Name-calling - Inappropriate comments HR is non-functioning. Multiple complaints have been ignored. The data strategy is vague and misguided. Lots of focus on buzzwords, with little understanding of technology, data, or... strategy. Career progress is limited, and pay is below average for the industry.

I have been working at Channel 4 full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great food and subsidised. Not corporate Friendly, open, creative and engaging culture. Fairly flat hierarchy Low pressure. Private medical. Some interesting events (movie screenings, staff social events etc.)

    Cons

Pay is less than you'll get elsewhere. Lacks commercial acumen (but generally being less corporate is also a plus) Organisation is currently going through a lot of change, which hasn't been handled or communicated well. Strategy and leadership is confused and muddy versus other organisations I've worked in. I know many of my colleagues also have no idea where C4 wants to be in 3-5 years (or even next year)..., particularly vs. the competition. Given that - it's very difficult to know how to effectively support the organisation's strategy at an operational level. Smaller organisation, you'll likley have a great time - but you may struggle to progress. Surprisingly silo'ed given everyone works pretty much in one building.

    Advice to Management

Focus on maintaining and continuing to improve the culture - this will be difficult given the new locations. Clarify and communicate the strategy, come up with some common ideas and themes that everyone can relate to. Find other organisations who do this well in other industries . I'm worried C4 will struggle (and may ultimately fail) to find a place as more and more streaming services eats into its core... demographic's viewing time. Appoint a proportionate number of board directors in Leeds. Current approach leaves a sour taste with employees .
