Pros

-It's a stable, established company with very little competition. -It's downtown. -Decent benefits. -Potential for upward mobility. -Bike parking in the basement.

Cons

-Scheduling software is based on outdated technology. -Very little innovation, likely because they have no competitors. -Punitive approach to time off, regardless of the reason. Working from home is never allowed, either. -No HR department. -Base compensation is way below market. They justify this by putting everyone in a monthly "bonus pool" based on that month's revenue, which is then split by however many people are in the department. This often means that you're taking home very little money. It also means that they run very lean in terms of staff-- who wants to hire more people when that means your pay will decrease? -Since they run so lean, nearly everyone is overworked. That's just an understood part of life at CN. -Payday comes only once per month. -Departments are very segregated and it's difficult to get to know anyone outside of one's department. -High turnover. -For a Portland tech company, there is almost no sense of culture.

Pros

* The people working around the clock to keep this company going are very nice and capable people. * The workload isn't much.

Cons

* The tech is very outdated. It's a black hole for your career. If you work here for too long you will dead end your marketable skills because almost none of them are transferable to standard industry practices and tech stacks. * Management has created a toxic culture. The CEO regularly sends book length rants about random things. I have to ask others to interpret them. Everyone is afraid of being fired if they share an opinion. * Raises are scarce. * Working hard will not get you a raise. Management wants everything to be a rigid process so you will only get a raise if you are senior and merit is not a factor. It operates like a union.

Downward spiral into nothingness

Pros

* benefits * pay * office location * free parking

Cons

This company has gone downhill, fast. They will do massive layoffs without trying to place people in new roles. They do not care about the people, and will layoff even the most senior and longstanding employees. Don't expect any warm and fuzzy feelings working here, or any reviews or positive reinforcement.
