A high school with a corporate structure

Pros

Pay and benefits and easy work, not challenging at all, most average capable people can do it and it seems to be a feature across multiple areas and disciplines. In general it is one of those companies that runs itself and most people don’t need to be that driven or creative, money keeps flowing no matter what.

Cons

It is literally run like a high school in the absence of adults, sometimes it even looks like a kindergarten playground. Cliques are everywhere and if you don’t fit in one of them they make sure to exclude you from everything. Dog whistling and racism are mildly obvious not matter how hard they try to appear otherwise. Diversity is null, unless you suck up really hard to male Anglo speaking white management. Code of conduct is applied selectively. Clearly incompetent people get promoted out of nowhere and for no obvious reason, merits none.

Pros

Very strong and competitive benefits package, safety is absolutely a priority, and that is essential in the industry. True team and family oriented environment and camaraderie in the field. Internal mobility. On going training to support career advancement

Cons

Inconsistent, new positions can open, but management has already decided who is going to move into the role. Micromanagement at the corporate level. Lack of innovation and or resistant to change. Long hours make work life balance very challenging, if not almost impossible and everyone responds to emails or messages and while on vacation, illness or bereavement. Compensation is low, compared to similar positions in the same industry; however, there is opportunity to increase compensation of prescribed achievement levels.
