Some ups-some downs

Pros

The atmosphere feels like graduate school. You get to micromanage your own projects. You can jump right into projects (this is also a con). You get to personally meet with the owners and discuss current projects once a month. Owners have good insight and are very courteous and helpful. Everyone is nice and you can freely discuss software ideas or solver recommendations with coworkers. Fast growing company.

Cons

The middle management doesn't manage their team. No feeling of a "team". The pay is based solely on degree. Lack of transparency regarding changes made in company. Not enough sick-time or PTO. Little-to-no opportunities for promotion (and if there is, then employees are unaware of this). No proper or regulated training of new employees. Feeling of bias among middle-management.

Pros

- Everyone gets his own office - Free lunch every Friday - Open-door policy - Pay is OK but there is always a need to negotiate. Pay is usually biased towards degree-level and does not consider actual experience or expertise. - There are decent benefits (health care, 401k with matching, and other programs) - Madison is a really nice city - The office is quiet and calm - Offers standing desks

Cons

- There have been many people leaving the company over the past year (roughly 10% of total employees). Employees have low-confidence in the company? - Vice-presidents of company are engineers and not CEO's and are not business-saavy - Majority of managers are incompetent, closed-minded, and biased. It is difficult to be heard or present ideas without being disregarded/dismissed - There seem to be a lot of issues going on behind the scenes with no transparency. It is unsettling. - Clear discrimination of those who are considered "inferior". If you don't have a higher-degree, you will not be respected even if you are an expert in your field. - There are no Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) or equivalent. You need to learn for yourself and determine what you think your job should be. - There are performance reviews but you are not really given constructive criticisms so you don't know if you are doing well or not. If you get a small raise (<5%) then you can assume you have been performing adequately. But there is no conversation about ways to improve job performance (this could be due to previous point of not having clear job descriptions) - Sometimes decisions to push releases seem erratic and not well thought out.

Pros

- Work: There is a never-ending pool of interesting/challenging projects which are super fun to work on. Can learn a lot in a short period of time. Work-life balance is great; I do not think I have ever taken work home in all the years I have been here. Overall excellent job-satisfaction. - Colleagues: An extraordinarily smart, friendly, and dependable set of people who create a great work environment. Can count on them both at work and outside. - Owners: Very knowledgeable, accessible, and down-to-earth. For example, one of the owners saw my car stuck on the curbside buried in snow. They helped dig the snow and tow my car without me even asking. - Pay: Not the highest in the industry but much higher than the industry average. I like to look at the metric Job-satisfaction/pay which I think might be the highest in the CFD industry. - Offices: Everyone gets his/her private office. There is an open door office culture, but you can always close the door in times you are looking for that laser focus. Internationals: The company is pretty great when it comes to sponsoring international talent. They put a lot of effort into helping employees get their H1B and if H1B is picked in the lottery, there are opportunities to work in Europe/India offices. - Future: Company finances seem pretty strong. The client base is loyal and growing. Current resources are being put in the right direction. The future appears strong.

Cons

- Your degree plays a role in your starting salary which is fair, but in the longer term, the company should put more emphasis on how much value one is creating regardless of their background/degree when compensating them. - All managers in the company are super talented and respectful but are engineers at heart. Not all of them make a great team leader. This makes it difficult for some team members to set a clear career path and stay motivated.
