No follow through on promises

Pros

Flexible working hours, no pressure to be office based, friendly colleagues and good camaraderie between creatives and supportive team members to help you review and improve your writing if you wanted feedback.

Cons

Though the company advertises that they look after their own, and put their people first, those words are truly empty promises. MD frequently held culture workshops or forums to gather feedback on the workplace, then the results would be deleted and no action taken. There was no accountability for lack of action, even when questioned on it, and responses to negative feedback were always met with defensive and dismissive responses. When I decided to leave, I didn't hear from the MD once in my six week notice, not even a well wish or a thank you. The ops team stopped giving me work, and I was no longer invited to team meetings/feedback sessions. The MD and Head of People at the time also didn't show up to my exit interview, which shows how much they really think of their staff, even though all MD's linkedin posts say they care. I know there was another member of staff who was mistreated - they would have benefited from shorter hours due to chronic illness, and their requests for part time hours to ensure proper rest were denied, and not given alternative options, which is actually in violation of the Equality Act. For a company who advertises their 'culture' as a draw to new employees, there really was none. Not surprised retention is low and turnover is high.

Apathetic Leadership and High Turnover

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

Friendly colleagues who are nice and easy to work with. Fully remote, no pressure to be in an office.

Cons

High turnover. Not including redundancies and terminations, 15+ people quit over an eight months period. Limited career progression for most. It seems the closer you are personally to the Founder the better chance your role has at progressing and growing at Copy House. Salaries are generally low and not aligned with experience resulting in salary inconsistencies and discrepancies between the team. Apathetic leadership. When people are leaving the business (even if made redundant) the leadership team no longer acknowledges them during their remaining working days. No thanks, no goodbye. It comes across as very cold and unprofessional. It’s not something you expect from a small agency that prides itself on “employee well-being” and creating a positive company culture.

CopyHouse Response
3y
We’re sorry to hear that you had such a negative experience. We have made several changes since you left back in August and are always looking for ways to improve. Some of the initiatives we’ve rolled out have included a 4-day work week, mentor scheme and annual bonus (as we recognise that all of our people contribute to our success). We’ve also hired a Content Director (in May) who oversees the creative team and ensures everyone has a learning and development plan. He has a dedicated budget for investing in their growth and development and oversees their career trajectories. Looking back, almost everyone who has been at CopyHouse for more than a year has been promoted at least once. We also have a Head of People who regularly reviews salary levels to ensure it matches industry standards and is fair across the board. These reviews happen quarterly. Altogether, these changes have positively contributed to create a good retention rate with few people leaving within the last six months. Thank you though for your feedback. We’ll take it all onboard and look for any other ways we can improve (in addition to the above).

Toxic work environment, high turnover

Recommend

Business outlook

Pros

The people are great, talented creatives Flexible working

Cons

Lack of transparency with what doing on within the company, creatives were often left out of the loop. Extremely high turnover — it’s a company of about 30 and nearly 20 people left in the time I worked there The CEO picks favourites and ignores everyone else It’s difficult to get them to create and execute a growth plan, and they underpay compared to market value. Workloads were often disorganised and unbalanced. Creatives would be moved around to different clients frequently so we could hardly finish a project or get to know one client. One day we’d be schedule a massive workload and nothing the next. Unreliable — they made redundancies without warning. The situation may have improved since I left but this was not a work environment I would ever wish upon anyone else. They draw people in with big shiny promises but the culture and flexibility isn’t all it’s advertised as.
