A Disheartening Experience in a Dysfunctional and Toxic Environment
Pros
Great colleagues and a strong sense of camaraderie within the teams. Good networking opportunities and chance to connect with industry leaders that significantly expanded my professional circle and enriched my understanding of the field. Engagement with scientific and academic institutions.
Cons
Toxic management, primarily driven by narcissistic leaders who hand out promotions based on connections rather than merit, leaving truly talented individuals overlooked and undervalued. The culture is riddled with big egos, and there’s a glaring lack of concern for employees doing essential fieldwork. Leadership is quick to celebrate their successes, but they consistently ignore the major issues that plague the organization. It's frustrating to watch them pat themselves on the back while the ground-level staff struggles to meet unmanageable demands. Financial management is poor, and it shows. New sites are opening up every year without adequate consideration for the existing struggling locations. Instead of investing in and supporting these sites, management seems to operate on a “move fast and break things” mentality, which only exacerbates the challenges faced by employees. Moreover, there’s a disheartening lack of support for staff who are let go, with no effort to redeploy them to the new sites being launched. It feels ironic that a program meant to nurture and support startups is completely devoid of a nurturing culture for its own employees. Instead of encouraging those with potential, the environment favors a “superstar” mentality, leaving many promising individuals feeling unsupported and overlooked.
