Pros

Great colleagues and a strong sense of camaraderie within the teams. Good networking opportunities and chance to connect with industry leaders that significantly expanded my professional circle and enriched my understanding of the field. Engagement with scientific and academic institutions.

Cons

Toxic management, primarily driven by narcissistic leaders who hand out promotions based on connections rather than merit, leaving truly talented individuals overlooked and undervalued. The culture is riddled with big egos, and there’s a glaring lack of concern for employees doing essential fieldwork. Leadership is quick to celebrate their successes, but they consistently ignore the major issues that plague the organization. It's frustrating to watch them pat themselves on the back while the ground-level staff struggles to meet unmanageable demands. Financial management is poor, and it shows. New sites are opening up every year without adequate consideration for the existing struggling locations. Instead of investing in and supporting these sites, management seems to operate on a “move fast and break things” mentality, which only exacerbates the challenges faced by employees. Moreover, there’s a disheartening lack of support for staff who are let go, with no effort to redeploy them to the new sites being launched. It feels ironic that a program meant to nurture and support startups is completely devoid of a nurturing culture for its own employees. Instead of encouraging those with potential, the environment favors a “superstar” mentality, leaving many promising individuals feeling unsupported and overlooked.

Pros

Amazing colleagues across the network and you gain access to a great pool of start-ups and mentors.

Cons

Extremely toxic work culture of micromanagement that is led by arrogant leaders who don't listen to feedback. Extremely high turnover of staff and sites themselves. Constantly launching and opening new sites but then they often only have 2-3 year runway before running out of money and closing quietly, People get made redundant extremely regularly across the network as sites close with no effort made to re-hire good staff members to other sites. Self-congratulatory work culture - you can't give feedback as the senior leadership only want to hear how amazing CDL is. The work for both venture manager and operations staff is often repetitive and administrative, You will not get promoted here as they only people promoted are those that engross themselves into the cult work-culture.

Pros

You learn about exciting companies, your colleagues are also cool. You can built relationships with the founders and build your network in the startup ecosystem.

Cons

Overall very toxic culture. Avoid if you can. CDL is a club for mentors and you will not be a member of this club. They will not let you talk to mentors, they will not you even allow you to switch your camera on if you are at the online CDL sessions, because it "distracts mentors". You will never be seen or heard and will be shut down if you want to speak-up. The management is self-absorb with the greatness of CDL and their own greatness and refuse to think critically or listen to anyone. It's a bit like a religious cult: those who follow the religious dogmas get promoted, others leave.
