Not for me

Pros

- Right approach to business: combine doctors and engineers for best patient outcomes - Easy parking (but not covered, and caltrain is far) - Good lunch - Benefits were generally good, but no Relocation assistance - Most of the employees seemed happy to be there

Cons

Leadership did not feel committed - Neal Khosla (CEO) is splitting his time between Curai and another startup (totemic.com). Startups are hard. I don't think this is a good idea, and I think it sends the wrong message to employees and potential investors. - Neil Hunt was rarely around, maybe 1/day per week, often less, sometimes more. - Xavier (CTO) was focused primarily on hiring, I felt he could have been more involved on the technical decision making and direction, especially given the sizable technical debt. Technical debt - Curai's core offering is FirstOpinion. They acquired it around a year ago, and got no engineers from the original FirstOpinion team to do meaningful knowledge transfer. It is full of questionable python code and naive design decisions. - No one could give me a clear picture of the overall architecture. - I spent too much time on Devops. Simple things like scheduling/deploying a job were all configured by hand, and required some trial and error, even after I tried documenting the process. Organizational issues - It felt like we were missing a layer of middle managers. ICs were spending a lot of time doing project management work. - Decisions were discussed with a consensus approach, but without managers to finalize and communicate decisions, I never felt like the direction was particularly clear. - Eng team needed more veterans. Business model - I had concerns with the amount of runway and the path to profitability appearing to be a long one. - Providing care via qualified doctors is expensive. My last piece of advice would be to do research on the CEO and who the investors are to make sure you are getting the full picture and are OK with it.

Thank you for the feedback. This is something I asked about when I was hired and I appreciated seeing this, so I knew to ask. A lot has changed since then. Our CEO is full-time with us and has been for well over three years. We have a dedicated executive team committed to driving our mission forward. It is an exciting time to be part of Curai.

Untouchable Nepotism

Pros

Cool product, exciting mission, decent pay

Cons

This company has a few leaders who are untouchable, and it's been a growing problem the last few years. They have very little industry or leadership experience. Anyone who argues with them too much or does anything different than their style gets reprimanded. Do not try to be anything other than a hustling worker bee here, you will be shut down. Certain leaders even try to fish out who gave negative feedback on quarterly surveys. Can't talk to HR, they just say there's nothing they can do. It's incredibly toxic and so many people feel like they can't complain or they'll get fired. Cherry on top is that these people don't have much experience outside of here so they have no clue how to make a good product or team other than the latest blog post they read. If you have more experience and try to help with constructive feedback? Get reprimanded.

Pros

The company has a great mission, providing the best affordable healthcare to everyone, and the product addresses a very real need. Partly because it's such a small team, there is a tight feedback loop between working on the product and the satisfaction and health outcomes of customers. It's always very gratifying to see the results of user interviews that show our product really helped somebody at a tough moment in their lives, even while at the same time seeing up-close the unfair vagaries of the US's healthcare system. There's also a great culture. Everyone I've met at Curai is genuine, friendly, welcoming, and approachable, from other engineers to doctors to upper management. The company at every level is staffed by people from a diversity of cultural, economic, and even professional backgrounds, which makes it feel very inclusive.

Cons

Those looking for a big company experience may not like the scrappy startup vibe at the company. The team is still very small so there is a lot to do, a lot of impact to make, and folks need to be flexible and open in order to make that work. The widely-distributed workforce can also mean trying to find meeting times that work for people in multiple timezones, though the company is deliberately trying to get better at asynchronous collaboration. The remote-first nature of the company means being very diligent about scheduling and attending online meetings.
