A failure in leadership

Pros

Cool project concepts Fully stocked kitchen Good health insurance Great people (below middle management, at least)

Cons

Abysmal leadership from the tippy-top down to design directors. Management is too afraid to be up front about most things, so direction often becomes convoluted or completely non-existent. The Tim’s are completely out of touch with their employees, who are incredibly talented and smart. The owners have no idea just how much work their employees put in. The Tims’ ONLY priority is $$$ and they can’t see value in anything or anyone else. They constantly and consistently sacrifice quality for speed. A lot of “legacy” employees. There are a lot of employees who have been there so long that they are stuck; this clouds their judgment. People are so stuck in their ways that they are unwilling to adapt to the changing world of design. While very driven by title hierarchy, Downstream really has no concept of what each role actually entails. Each project is doomed to be chaotic due to this. Downstream has absolutely zero concept of process, which also adds to the chaos. Sales-driven; impossible deadlines sold by the out-of-touch sales team without consulting designers and devs.

Pros

Great office, talented staff, phenomenal client list, interesting/unique projects you can brag about, fully stocked kitchen - high quality, organic food and beverages.

Cons

Egotistical, micro-managing owners who expect you to kill yourself for the glory of working at Downstream. Blind to the amount of work staff puts in. Management literally took away a week of PTO claiming it was a financial decision - probably was, but who cares? it's unethical to go back on an employment contract. This decision was not set right when company was again awash in projects. Account management team makes insane promises to customers in order to get them to sign on the dotted line - completely disregarding company's ability to deliver and introducing artificial stress into an already challenging environment. Huge turnover in every department. Constant, pervasive lack of creative leadership - which makes projects like rudderless ships lurching through the high seas. With one exception, uniquely incompetent accounting department. Ton of money lost via horrible billing practices.

Pros

Free snacks; nice area; friendly, smart coworkers; and chance to work on many different, interesting projects. Good place to get some real world experiences whether good or mainly bad.

Cons

Poor management, high turnover, being used as a scapegoat for why projects weren't done at the date promised (if the team says it'll take certain time, believe them,) project managers breathing down your neck until something was done, thankless required overtime, and being under paid for the work you're doing because you were hired to do something else. I would blame the CEO for the problems, but while I was there he was barely ever in the office. This place will eat you up and spit you out. Work somewhere else that respects their employees better.
