Leadership as unusual

Pros

Working at ESMT comes with a real sense of pride at being associated with a well-regarded and prestigious school in the heart of Berlin. The main campus is the former State Council building of the GDR; it's incredible to work in such a historically significant place (however, be aware that unless you're Faculty, you won't actually do your job in the impressive building, you'll be working in the dilapidated 60s office block behind it!). As a top German business school with excellent alumni and unparalleled connections to the the leaders of multinational companies, and even national governments, you can rub shoulders with some very interesting people. Most colleagues are genuinely friendly, very supportive, and proactively interested in helping you succeed. Consequently it's possible to create strong friendships.

Cons

There is an unfortunate culture of opaque, and extremely hierarchical decision-making. If the senior management has any long term plan or strategy for the school, it isn't communicated transparently or underpinned by SMART objectives. The small group of people with any real decision-making power severely lacks diversity (see the composition of the management committee and the school's various governing boards). The school's leadership rarely looks favourably on alternative perspectives or constructive criticism, especially from those not considered to have sufficient professional seniority or social status. Although many issues like these, and their causes, are well-known, there seems to be a fundamental inability among senior leadership to consider that THEY and THEIR approach, might be problematic.

Pros

People are nice and collegial. Easygoing environment. People genuinely care about students and their success

Cons

Not a place to develop yourself rigorously, not data-driven/ intuition is used to make decisions that should require more inputs, no culture of people development/investment, lack of ambitious goal setting and progress tracking, little opportunity to meaningfully get to know colleagues, no upward trajectory since higher ups have been around for a long time, somewhat resistant to change

Dear former colleague, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We appreciate hearing from our current and former employees, as it helps us continuously improve our workplace environment. We're pleased to hear that you found our food offerings to your liking. Ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of our team members is important to us. However, we are deeply concerned by the negative aspects you've highlighted. At ESMT Berlin, we prioritize fostering a positive and supportive work environment for all employees. We take allegations of a stressful environment and aggressive behavior by our HR team very seriously. These are not in line with our values or the culture we strive to cultivate. We are committed to investigating these matters further to ensure that every member of our team feels valued, respected, and supported. Regarding your mention of a "slavery culture," we want to emphasize that such an accusation is incredibly serious and goes against everything we stand for as an organization. We do not tolerate any form of exploitation or unethical practices in our workplace. Please contact me directly (carolin.ludwig@esmt.org) to provide more specific details about your experiences so we can address them promptly and appropriately. We take your feedback seriously and remain committed to creating a positive and inclusive work environment for all. Sincerely, Carolin Ludwig Deputy Director of Human Resources ESMT Berlin
