Management plays favorites, then will try to "manage out" when the decision to let someone go is made - instead of being straightforward, they use administrative process and turn a blind eye to refutations. HR exists to legally cover the company and management, not to represent the employee. I was twice assigned huge projects that were way out of my league and then closely tracked for performance hits later on. Many of the best performers are onsite and enjoy the benefits of working more closely together that is forbidden (by management) for WFH employees; WFH will find a much harder time connecting to the team and getting to know stakeholders in different departments.
