Pros

Some of the people, that actually want to solve problems.

Cons

The company presents itself as people-first, but in practice that often feels more like a slogan than a reality. Leadership frequently says “our greatest asset is our people,” yet many employees are left feeling undervalued, unsupported, and blamed for problems created at the top. The CEO comes across as more interested in personal image and storytelling than in listening to or respecting employees. There is a significant disconnect between what leadership says and what it actually does. Advancement appears to depend less on performance and more on staying in the good graces of senior leadership and feeding their egos. Senior management often makes poor decisions, then employees are left to absorb the consequences. Those who speak up or push back can feel targeted rather than supported. HR has been a revolving door, and the most recent VP of HR has shown extremely poor judgment and inconsistent decision-making. There also seems to be a lack of alignment within senior leadership itself. Many leaders appear to disagree with or distrust one another behind the scenes, while pretending otherwise publicly. This creates confusion, inconsistency, and constant chaos throughout the organization. Everything is treated like an emergency every single day, which points to weak planning and ineffective management. Major decisions are constantly reversed or changed with little explanation, usually leaving employees to deal with the fallout. The company promotes awards and recognition as proof of a great culture, but from the inside, those accolades feel more like marketing than an accurate reflection of what it is actually like to work there.

Pros

- Nice co-workers - Flexible work environment

Cons

- Stagnant - Lack of strong leadership - Lack of strategy - there is a strategy (sort of) but it feel like it is out of a Management 101 textbook - Takes 4-5x as long to get anything done compared to other large organizations

Thank you for taking the time to share your perspective. Feedback from employees—past and present—is important to me and to our leadership team, and I’m genuinely sorry to hear that your experience has left you feeling this way. Over the past several years, AAA Washington has been undergoing meaningful transformation across our business. That kind of change can feel slow in some areas and fast in others, and I recognize that it can also create uncertainty or frustration. Your comments highlight some of the real challenges that come with modernizing a 120-year-old organization, and I appreciate you raising them. I would also like to offer a bit of context. Our strategic direction is shaped collaboratively with our Board and leaders across Operations, Member Experience, Sales, Finance and HR. We have invested heavily in strengthening these teams, including bringing in leaders with deep expertise in operations, people & culture, digital, and member experience. Many of the initiatives you may be referencing—technology upgrades, process improvements, ERS modernization, and several culture efforts—are multi-year by design, and while not every effort continues in its original form, the intent is always to learn, improve, and build in a way that benefits employees and members alike. That said, if you’ve experienced churn, lack of clarity, or unfulfilled follow-through, that is important for me to hear. Our goal is to create an environment where people feel supported, connected to a clear purpose, and able to do their best work. We’re continuing to improve how we communicate progress, build accountability, and empower teams to move work forward with more speed and alignment. I sincerely appreciate your call for humility, strong teams, and honesty—those are values I believe in deeply. If you’re open to sharing more, our HR team or I would welcome the opportunity to listen and learn from your experience directly. Thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback and for your years of service to AAA Washington. - Heather Snavely, CEO
