Pros

A team approach to nursing, everyone willing to help each other with difficult patients. Other than that, the pro is.... You made it through your shift alive and not beaten up!! You were told to keep the patients out of seclusion despite their dangerous behavior!! We had criminals mixed in with depressed people mixed in with someone's grandma!! What a great set up!!!

Cons

If you take this job and get beat up by a patient.... The hospital will tell you "When you took this job you should have known you had the chance to get hurt". While working here, they began accepting criminals who should have gone to jail, but showed up on our front step instead. One day, a prisoner arrived and beat his nurse until she was unrecognizable! The hospital hid behind their corporate lawyers! This poor nurse has PTSD and can't return because of how severely she was assaulted. The hospital knew how dangerous this floor was, but refused to put security on the floor because of how the "psychiatric patients would feel" Nurses were constantly begging for a security guard to sit up on the floor for protection!!! Taking this job would be a big mistake!! Go work with a population that is less dangerous because you will not be given compensation for any injury .....so it is not worth it!!! Let someone else get their livelihood taken away!!

Pros

Management is great, So understanding to the point that you're not even tempted to screw anybody over on scheduling. There is definitely a mutual respect within the culture. I'm in the float pool and really enjoy going somewhere different everyday. This is my first job in the hospital and the experience that I've gained in less than a year in this position has been invaluable. My advice is that you come in do your job, then go home.. then do it all over again. Being in the float pool is attractive because you're not committed to one area of the hospital and if you don't favor a unit due to it not being the type of unit you enjoy, or the atmosphere of the staff that are assigned to the floor.. it's okay because you won't have to go back until who knows when *shrugs shoulders*

Cons

Being in the float pool there is not much of a community - you don't see the manager often and are usually unaware of who the other floats are that are in the same position as you. Not everybody's cup of tea but I personally appreciate the non-committal environment and people that being in the float pool offers. Now.. the pay could be better - but there's endless opportunities for overtime and bonuses that are offered when they are short staffed. I'm also considered entry level for the healthcare field which is another thing affecting my pay rate, but when I pick up overtime + bonuses? It makes up for it, when I have the time or availability at least..
