Pros

The work we do on a day-to-day basis is very interesting, the people at the firm are extremely smart and approachable, and the work-life balance is great. The culture which encourages collaboration over competition is difficult to find at similar firms that have people with comparable pedigrees.

Cons

I always feel pressed for time since there is so much to do but not enough time or people to finish it all. Hiring has picked up lately so hopefully that will help.

Pros

Tough to imagine a better place to have started my career -- the opportunities for growth and responsibility have been unparalleled. ATX is made up of a friendly, incredibly smart, and highly ambitious cohort. Despite the really high expectations, everyone at the firm is kind and focused on collaboration -- I could not say the same about many of our competitors that I have come into contact with over the years. The firm promotes from within, meaning that virtually all of the senior people at the firm started as analysts right out of college. The firm continues to grow and expand into new opportunities, meaning that there is consistent room for upward advancement. Additionally, compensation can be significant for top performers and big contributors, and the comp plan allows for a direct tie to overall firm performance. Overall -- joining ATX was the best choice I could have made out of college, and I'm planning to stick around for the long-term.

Cons

The nature of the work does mean that hours can be on the longer side some weeks (55-70 hours depending). The good thing is you know well in advance which weeks those will be so you can easily plan for it.

Pros

Great group of people -- I like and respect everyone I work with: uniformly smart and friendly. Seriously a lot to learn, you have to be interested in figuring out the problem. The managers care about everyone’s career growth -- sometimes they miss the mark on what information is helpful, but they are clearly trying. Low turnover -- most people are in it for the long-haul. Comp is clearly tied to both firm performance and my performance -- in a good year, bonuses are significant.

Cons

If you care a lot about best programming practices, you will not love the focus on getting an answer over using the prettiest code -- some of the historical code is pretty gnarly. There’s been a historic focus on working together at a whiteboard that precludes a lot of remote work -- so, while the vacation policy is generous, the remote work allowance isn’t big. Lastly, there are some weekend trade responsibilities that everyone rotates through, which can take a few hours over some weekends.
