Pros

- A+ Team of Hadoop Developer, Operations and Software Engineers.

Cons

Overall negative work environment with no respect for individuals. People have this notion of being best of the class and only things need to be done is their way because "THEY HAVE DONE IT IN PAST". The execution team is a failure, people responsible are the FAILED people who could have made YAHOO search better and made YAHOO more successful. A bunch of failed individual got to together to offer Hadoop As Service, just because they ran 40,000 nodes at YAHOO. Its always friction and non-respectful to work with Technology Leaders and Operational Leaders. Feel sad every morning, I come to work and see around empty seats. Firing the workerBees and not touching useless management was the height of misuse of power. People who really brought value were let go and people who are drawing FAT paychecks seating on the other side of the office were left behind, just to tell us on that we are "constipated".

At times certain areas look over engineered and could be simplified.

Pros

Experienced management who have all done successful startups before. Management is fairly accessible, with a weekly all-hands meeting and a regular all-hands offsite. Great team of Hadoop engineers, operators and architects. If anyone can make Hadoop run smoothly, this team can. There are plenty of perks, including Friday lunches, flexible hours, unlimited vacation, and snacks/drinks. The company has many customers, and they seem to be happy. It seems most are increasing their purchases over time.

Cons

Altiscale is not immune to the typical challenges of a startup. Sales are not landing as fast as the company had hoped, which has led to a layoff. Management continues to work on the product mix, moving up-stack in an attempt to sell to the business versus IT, forcing us to develop product and land customers at the same time. It's a juggling act that makes it difficult for everyone in the company. These cons are real, but they are pretty typical of a startup.
