Pros

Nice new office compared to the old one.

Cons

Very old fashioned and outdated working styles. Micromanagement is often normal here and accountability doesn’t exist. Work is more, salaries are less, especially with in office policy enforcing. Pension matching is low, benefits are limited. Bonuses aren’t what you would expect from a private bank.

Pros

I like the environment and how the bank operates. It’s very hands-on and you’re expected to take ownership, which suits how I like to work. I’ve worked in similar environments before and generally prefer it to the hierarchy you get at big banks. I've found that the leaders across the business I deal with are approachable, accessible, and welcoming of good debate. I’ve always felt comfortable being myself at work. Work/life balance has also been good. I’m a bit of a workaholic, but I’ve never felt pressure to be online outside normal hours which are typically 9-5. Recently I went through a promotion process and felt it was handled well. Like any interview process there were nerves involved, but I felt supported by my line manager throughout. The process itself was pretty standard compared to elsewhere I’ve worked... competency interview with two senior leaders and a presentation to an ExCo member. Given the size of the bank, there isn’t always a completely defined progression path, but in my exprience with the bank growing there are good opportunities for people who are proactive about their development.

Cons

As with any smaller banks growing quickly, there are growing pains, but nothing I haven’t seen elsewhere in similar environments. Personally I’d rather be somewhere like AL that is growing vs the alternative!

Pros

Generally maintains a 9–5 working culture and is accommodating of personal arrangements and flexible working where possible. With over 800 employees, there are strong opportunities for networking and cross-functional visibility across the organisation. Internal mobility is more accessible than in more rigid or highly structured companies, and employees often gain early exposure to senior stakeholders. The organisation also benefits from a strong external reputation, alongside reasonable perks such as free coffee and visible CSR initiatives

Cons

Despite its external reputation, there is a lack of transparency and accountability internally. Senior managers who undermine employees are often protected due to their perceived importance, creating a culture where abuse of power is tolerated. Wellbeing initiatives feel performative due to a disconnect between stated values and day-to-day practices. High performers and specialists are discouraged from contributing beyond instructions, which can negatively impact psychological safety. HR does not function effectively as a safeguarding or escalation mechanism, particularly where concerns involve senior leadership, leaving junior employees especially vulnerable. Role expectations frequently exceed job descriptions, while pay remains tightly benchmarked to the original role scope. This environment is not well suited to experienced professionals seeking structure and ethical leadership, nor to early-career employees who require clear protections and support.
