Pros

Arkose Labs offers challenging and interesting work (Technically), and peers in engineering are helpful and kind.

Cons

Politics and infighting are 90% of what you will deal with as an engineer. Decisions made outside of engineering consistently dictate technical implementation details, even when they clearly won't achieve the desired outcome. A constant stream of surveys makes you feel heard but responses fall on deaf ears and result in no impactful change. Engineering managers are more interested in infighting and one-upping other Managers than understanding and investing the career development of their direct reports. Promotions are used as a strategic tool rather than a recognition of an employees level of skill / competence. There is no bonus program for employees (aside from one offs for "exceptional" work, or peer driven point system); even recognition for exceptional work only come to those who market their work well. The so-called bi-annual salary negotiation is a PDF received in slack. Arkose once had excellent pay - That is no longer the case. Recently Arkose "let go" of 40+ staff, and now we're hiring in the same offices again. Last but certainly not least, Arkose's "culture". Drinks on Fridays and monthly mental health days are heralded as proof of Arkoses excellent culture. However they just come across as a desperate attempt to draw in new and unsuspecting employees. There is no concerted effort to improve interpersonal relations between employees, even just within teams. More recently all company activities have been planned outside work hours too.

Thank you for your feedback! I will address specific areas you mentioned and provide our point of view. We are constantly soliciting feedback so we can improve and be a better organisation. We take feedback seriously and have implemented changes in response. You mentioned wellness days, and that’s an example of where we listened to feedback and made a change. Our wellness days are paid time off for everyone once a month to promote mental health and well-being. It is unfortunate that your experience is that some managers are less interested in career development. We hear you and will conduct an investigation. We have multiple success stories where staff have worked extremely hard on career development plans with their managers over several months resulting in well-deserved promotions. You’re right that Arkose does not have annual bonuses, but we are a start-up, and it’s uncommon for start-ups to have annual bonuses. However, we do have spot bonuses for exceptional work, and lucrative referral bonuses. Many employees that put in extra effort and exhibit behaviour that maps to our core values have been recognised through our generous spot bonus program. Unusually, Arkose implemented a secondary mid-year compensation review for employees that were not eligible (e.g. due to start date) so staff did not have to wait extended periods for a compensation adjustment. Pay increases should be delivered by a manager one-on-one, giving the manager time to provide context and to recognise the value that person brings to the company. Thank you for bringing this to my attention; I will ensure this does not happen again. It is an uncertain time in the tech sector and global markets. Given this, like many companies, Arkose made the difficult decision to streamline its workforce to facilitate the next growth stage. This decision was not made lightly but is a necessary one to ensure Arkose Labs’ continued growth. Our Friday drinks allow people to wind down and talk to those they don’t usually talk to regularly. We have listened to feedback and have included a round table discussion that generally gets the office laughing. If you’re open to discussing this further and helping make Arkose a better place for you, please reach out to me directly. Like you, I want Arkose to succeed. Pros

The company boasts a significant enterprise customer base and maintains a competitive advantage through its dedicated Security Operations Center (SOC) team. A truly "vibrant" culture. If you're seeking a workplace that truly tests your resilience, creativity in avoiding eye contact, and ability to thrive on passive-aggressive feedback, look no further! A unique corporate environment, particularly one that values a very specific and distinctive hiring pipeline. Arkose genius lies in their laser-focused strategy: apparently, the only prerequisite for joining the Arkose family is a former stint at ThreatMetrix. Diversity? Pffft. Who needs a breadth of experience when you can have a singular, deeply entrenched perspective on... well, whatever they were doing at ThreatMetrix that apparently wasn't quite stellar enough to keep them there. It's like watching a reunion special where everyone's trying to pretend their old band was actually good.

Cons

To support their admittedly green CEO, they've brought in an equally "talented" COO – someone whose incompetence is only outshone by their undeniable toxic charm. The company is currently experiencing organizational challenges characterized by a misaligned executive leadership team and a toxic work environment. Recent changes in the executive team have created a division between those who support the CEO and those who support the COO. This has resulted in a highly competitive and hostile work environment, The current COO has demonstrated a lack of engagement with customers and a history of missed quarterly revenue targets. This has led to concerns about the company's ability to maintain its market position and achieve its financial goals.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We take all employee experiences seriously and are sorry to hear this doesn't reflect the positive culture we work hard to maintain. We'd like to clarify a few points about our current organization: Leadership & Culture: We have strong, experienced leadership in place and are committed to fostering an inclusive, collaborative work environment. We regularly conduct employee engagement surveys and culture assessments to ensure we're meeting our team's needs. In fact, we recently conducted major global off-sites to realign on our goals and objectives, focusing specifically on our global workforce culture and alignment. Diversity & Inclusion: Contrary to the characterization in this review, we hire from a wide array of previous experiences and bring in candidates from all over the globe representing diverse companies and backgrounds. We're actively committed to building a diverse, global team and have ongoing DEI initiatives in place. We value diverse backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives at all levels of our organization. Growth & Development: We believe in investing in our people and providing opportunities for career advancement based on merit, performance, and potential. Business Performance: We are absolutely on track to meet our company goals and objectives this year, which reflects the strength of our team and leadership working together toward our shared mission. We encourage any current or former employees with concerns to reach out to our People Operations team directly so we can address specific issues and continue improving our workplace culture. We remain committed to being an employer where all team members can thrive and contribute to our mission.
