Not Inclusive and Cheap - Attorney Baker Sterchi Cowden & Rice Employee Review

Pros

Associate relationships are not toxic and there is good communication between STL and KC associates. Most non-equity partners have priorities aligned with associates but have no power to change anything.

Cons

Completely out-of-touch executive committee members, easily 80% of which are boomer white males (and act like it). No effort to elevate minorities or women to every exec committee, which is just one example of how the firm does not to try to be inclusive. Big hat and no cattle on diversity. Quick to get minorities and women in the door but do not provide support or representation at the power level. More professional than “old boys’ club” but functions the same way because puppet masters repeatedly notice and reward men, especially white men, and dismiss people of color and women. No HR. Greedy equity partners. Cheap across the board to keep money in equity pockets. Lexis. Off brand Kleenex. Old office furniture. No origination fee. Just got laptops for associates (not staff), even during Covid. Firm is micromanaged down to the dollar by executive director in KC and MP - basically a dictatorship with STL and IL offices having no control. More than one partner will take home $1mil+ meanwhile they gave $0 in retention bonuses or raises. Not sustainable for retention or growth. Seem to believe employees don’t pay attention to or share numbers. Spends time talking about getting attorneys to bring in clients but no one gets origination percentage unless equity so they don’t try to get business and resent management for wasting time.
