Pros
As a shift lead at HopCat, I’ve had the opportunity to see both the strengths and the consistent challenges of day-to-day operations. On the positive side, the team generally cares about the guest experience, and when the restaurant is staffed appropriately, service runs smoothly and guests leave happy. The atmosphere is energetic, and the brand’s emphasis on craft beer and comfort food has a strong local following. Overall, HopCat is an okay workplace: steady, usually manageable, and sometimes fun, but with enough inconsistencies to keep it firmly in the middle of the pack.
Cons
However, from a managerial standpoint, there are ongoing issues that impact both team performance and shift efficiency. Labor management is a persistent challenge—schedules often feel reactive rather than planned, which can leave us short-staffed during predictable peak hours and overstaffed at slower times. This not only creates unnecessary labor strain but also places pressure on leads to hit targets without consistent staffing support.
Prep and station readiness can vary significantly between shifts. Despite communication efforts, it’s not uncommon to come in and find stations under-stocked, prep incomplete, or opening responsibilities missed, which slows down service and forces the line to play catch-up during rushes. Accountability exists, but follow-through isn’t always consistent.
